The one man she’s always wanted is now the sexy sheriff of their hometown.
Battered but not broken, grad student Brianna Avery returns to the childhood home she abandoned four years ago. With her abusive ex behind bars, Bree needs the summer to relax and recover before returning to school. But her overprotective brother decides she needs someone to babysit her in his absence, and he picks the one person guaranteed to drive her nuts.

She’s the one woman he can’t have.
Telling Bree no has never been easy. Four years ago, Liam Hollister did it to preserve his friendship with his best friend—Brianna’s brother. Now, no matter how she tempts him, he’s determined to do the right thing. As deputy sheriff of their rural area, Liam is torn between protecting Brianna and wanting her for himself.

Take a risk or lose the chance.

Spending so much time alone together challenges them both. Old feelings and hurts resurface immediately. With each hot, sweaty day it’s harder to deny their attraction.

It’s going to be a long, hot summer.

I came across this book by Autumn Jones Lake on social media, the cover plastered all over my news feed and I admit I was intrigued. The premise of the story sounded interesting and the author was new to me. I took the plunge and downloaded this onto my Kindle. And what a brilliant choice that was.

Bullets and Bonfires tells the story of Liam and Brianna, two life long friends who have drifted apart, in part because of their romantic feelings for peach other and the path they took which lead them away. We start the story first with Liam, a local cop of a small town and overall good guy. He has a heart of gold and a moral compass we wish every man had. Mix in that he is handsome and you have a book boyfriend up there with the likes of Gideon Cross and Jesse Ward.

The story is told from both Liam and Brianna’s perspectives, each chapter highlighting to the readers internal struggles these two are facing and showing us just how deep the emotions run. Brianna isn’t the schoolgirl Liam once knew, escaping from a violent ex boyfriend Brianna is ready to stand her ground. Here is a heroine who has been beaten and downtrodden but is still fighting to be her own woman. A bold, smart and sassy leading lady, we instantly feel a connection to her. Beautiful inside and out, this is a leading lady we can all get behind.

The story evolves naturally and at a speed befitting the subject matter. I love how the author has made Liam Brianna’s protector but also giving her the room and strength to learn to look after herself. Sure she is frightened and Liam in the light in the darkness but instead of forcing another man onto our heroine, here we have a woman willing and able to save herself. With the leading man a bonus in the process.

The comfort and familiarity they have with each other puts the reader at ease and you read on purely to ensure that these flawed, beautiful characters get their happy ending.

Overall I am very happy I bought this book, glad I took the time to read Liam and Brianna’s story. This is one example of contemporary romance that gets the balance between sensual and romantic just right.

A re-read in future is a must!
