Alex lived through the war, but will he survive the peace?

Jewish gang member, Alex comes back from the Great War almost destroyed by the horrors he has seen. When he is plucked from certain death by an old friend, he commits to making so much money he’ll never know that agony again.

But the route to the top is fraught with danger and every time he helps one of his powerful friends like Al Capone, he acquires more enemies who want to see him dead. When organised crime financier, Arnold Rothstein dies, the turmoil caused by his loss sets in train a chain of events which means Alex must once more fight for his life. How far would you go to attain your American dream?

The second book in the Alex Cohen series is a violent historical novel, which tears through the Prohibition years of the Jewish New York mob. Leopold Borstinski’s gripping crime noir pierces the heart of every reader like a bullet from Alex’s sniper rifle.

Review:

After reading the Bowery Slugger I jumped at the chance of reading the second book in the Alex Cohen series.

In this second book we rejoin Alex after he returns to America after the First World War, haunted by the horrors he has experienced whilst away. With blanks in his memories, he struggles to remember where he left money for safekeeping before he left the country so falls into homelessness resigning himself to living on the streets. An old friend saves him from a short lived life of homelessness and Alex vows to never allow himself to fall into that position again, learns how to cope with his PTSD from the Great War and reinstates old friendships and connections to make himself lots of money.

I found this to be another brilliant fast paced page turner in the Alex Cohen series. How we meet old characters and new, including some famous faces and where Alex’s decisions lead him in the midst of the Prohibition period in America.

When I finished book 2 I cannot wait to get stuck into book 3 when I get the chance!

Blurb:

A turn-of-the-century Jewish boy punches his way into the gangs of New York.

When Alex Cohen arrives in 1915 America, he seizes the land of opportunity with both hands and grabs it by the throat. But success breeds distrust and Alex must choose between controlling his gang and keeping his friend alive. What would you do if the person you trusted most is setting you up to die at your enemies’ hands?

The first book in the Alex Cohen series is a violent historical novel, which rips through the early years of the Jewish New York mob. Leopold Borstinski’s gripping crime noir beats at the chest of every reader with a bloody fist.

Review:

This is the first book in a brand new series from Leopold Borstinski. Whilst I have read previous books by this author before, I have never read one of an American gangster genre so I jumped at the opportunity.

Alex and his family left their old home, and his questionable employment to create a new and better life for themselves and a chance for Alex to go straight in the land of opportunity, America.

Landing in New York they quickly find that this is not the case and Alex is drawn back into criminal employment to help support his family. A violent and harsh life he progresses in the Jewish gang he rises in the ranks so he is soon running his own crew.

I found this to be a very clever and well written story. It was well paced right up until the page turning end. I can’t wait to read the next book in this very exciting start to a new series.
