Lucy Clairmont’s family treasured the magic of the past, and her childhood fascination with stories of the high seas led her to become a marine archaeologist. But when tragedy strikes, it’s Dashel, an American forensic astronomer, and his knowledge of the stars that may help her unearth the truth behind the puzzle she’s discovered in her family home.

Two hundred years earlier, the seeds of love are sown between a boy and a girl who spend their days playing in a secret sea cave, while the privileged young son of the estate looks on, wishing to join. As the children grow and war leads to unthinkable heartbreak, a story of love, betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption unfolds, held secret by the passage of time.

As Lucy and Dash journey to a mysterious old estate on the East Sussex coast, their search leads them to a community of souls and a long-hidden tale that may hold the answers–and the healing–they so desperately seek.

Review:

Set in present day and 200 years in the past, this was a wonderful novel, layered together so the 2 time periods wove together into a beautifully told story with the mystery blended inbetween.

I was completely absorbed into the world Amanda has created and I loved the characters in both time periods, feeling as though I was following in their immediate footsteps as the story progressed, empathising with their highs, lows, frustrations and anxieties.

I feel I cannot put into enough words about how I feel about this book, just that for me this book truly set the stars alight for me and cannot wait to read another book by Amanda soon!

A gripping mystery of jealousy, murder and lies.

An invitation to her estranged, wealthy father’s surprise 75th birthday party in New York sees Amelia and her husband, Jack, set off across the pond to meet a whole new world of family politics.

Amelia, now a successful businesswoman, feels guilty about never liking her father’s women, so does her upmost to give his new socialite partner, Evelyn, the benefit of the doubt. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could just all get along? But there’s something very dark, determined and dangerous about her…

When Amelia’s father, Roger, becomes ill, Jack grows suspicious that there is more to it. Amelia understands why, but no one else will believe them. They travel back to America to piece together the puzzle, but when Roger goes missing, the couple are driven to their wits’ end. It takes a DEA officer and a secret assassin to bring them answers, but the ruthless truth is something no one expected…

Review:

When Amelia is invited to her estranged father, 75th birthday she jumps at the chance to mend bridges and rekindle their relationship. After he divorced her mother when she was a child, he has had a string of partners which Amelia never warmed to. Feeling guilty at her disapproval of her father’s choice in women she decides to try and befriend his latest partner Evelyn in an effort to improve their connection.

As soon as I started this book I found I could not actually put it down and finished in record time. Just as I thought I had the characters all worked out something else was thrown into the mix and collapsed my theories. I loved the way the chapters alternated through certain characters so as a reader we got a better insight into what was happening at the time.

I was completely enthralled by the depth of the jealousy and lies that threaded throughout the story, and just when I thought it had reached the end, there was another twist and a little more.

I know I will definitely be picking up more books by this author as soon as I can!

Review:

When Jeff and his friend Suzi try to locate their classmate who hasn’t appeared at school for a few days they are propelled into a mystery involving the scarily named Devilgate Drive.

I have read books by Colin before so when the opportunity to read and review this book I jumped at the chance. When I was younger I used to love reading Goosebumps and this follows in a similar spooky vein. We are introduced to a wealth of characters, from the kids and teachers at school to their parents and the shopkeepers in the cove. I love the name of the town Skeleton Cove and that the streets in the town fit with the spooky name. The book is fast paced which I found I could not put down, when I did after I had first picked it up I was already a third of the way through the story!

This is the start of a brand new series and I will definitely be reading the next in this series soon!

WHITE HOT THRILLS! PITCH BLACK DEEDS!

3 TALES OF TEENS TACKLING THEIR DARKEST RITES OF PASSAGE

Acclaimed storytellers Russ Colchamiro, Sawney Hatton, and Patrick Thomas each present an original novella brimming with enough danger, intrigue, and murder to get readers’ blood pounding and hearts racing.

In Colchamiro’s RED INK, a paperboy with an overactive imagination witnesses a brutal killing on his route—or has he taken his fantasy spy games a step too far?

In Hatton’s THE DEVIL’S DELINQUENTS, a trio of teenage misfits in pursuit of success, power, and revenge practice amateurish occult rituals… with deadly consequences.

In Thomas’s A MANY SPLENDID THING, a sultry high school teacher enrolls one of her students to get rid of her husband. But will the young man really graduate to murder?

Review:

When the opportunity appeared to read and review this set of novellas I jumped at the chance as I do like noir fiction.

I was absorbed immediately into this collection which was fast paced, cleverly written and very dark at times, which actually gave me the shivers. Once I started I could not put it down, until I had finished the entire book!

All 3 were well written and I loved the way the novellas were all set in the same town, setting a common theme throughout the set. By reading these novellas I have now found 3 new to me authors that I will definitely be picking up more of their work soon!

If you love noir fiction you need to have this collection on your bookshelf!

Tonight they’ll share their darkest secrets, but tomorrow, there is no escape…
A devastating tsunami is heading towards the Cornish coast. With no early warning and limited
means of escape, many people won’t get away in time.
While the terrifying reality of the news hits home, one young woman posts a message on Facebook,
‘With nowhere to run to, I’m heading to my favourite beach to watch the sunset, who wants to join
me?’
A small group of people follow her lead and head towards the beach; each of them are harbouring
their own stories, and their own secrets.
As they come together in the dying light of the Cornish sunset, they will discover something much
more powerful than they ever imagined. But there is no escaping the dawn … the wave is coming…

Review:

An unthinkable natural disaster, a tsunami heading towards Cornwall.

No early warning system and a very limited means of escape for the hundreds of thousands of people that live and holiday there. Not everyone will escape in time.

One woman post a message on social media that she is not going to try to leave the county as she knows she will not be able to escape. So instead she is going to make camp on her favourite beach, extending the invitation to anyone who wishes to join her.

When I first read the blurb for this book it gave me goosebumps, telling a friend what I was reading gave me goosebumps, as I write this review now I it gives me goosebumps.

This haunting tale, was beautifully written about a small group of people who came together on a beach to live out their last hours together rather than stuck on motorways with no chance of escaping the wave in time.

I loved that each chapter we had the whole group telling their point of view on things on current events, how they were feeling and what they felt towards the other members in their group as revelations were made whilst the clock ticked down to the inevitable ending. By the last chapter I was in tears as I had become so attached to these characters I did not want to read the end.

It is not very often I have a book that affects me so profoundly, even as I finish writing this review I have tears in my eyes. I know this book will stay in my heart with my other favourites for a long time.

I will definitely be recommending this to everyone who asks me what to read

A gang of kids, for abit of excitement and to earn a few bob decide to steal some empty bottles from the pop factory, so they can return them for money. Unfortunately they are caught and told to return to apologise for their actions. Whilst there they discover some unusual information which throws them into the middle of espionage and Government secrets.

As a child I always loved to read about gangs of children going on adventures and solving mysteries. This book reminded me of stories and TV series I used to love but with a more grown up style, suiting a YA and older audience.

I found this to be a compelling read, with a wealth of characters, that kept the pages turning right up until the very end.

I cannot wait to see what adventures The Devil’s Porridge Gang will find next!

Ryan Willis has spent years in the protection business, a job that requires constant vigilance and quick thinking. His only chance to truly relax is at his secluded cabin in a small town where there are never any surprises. So when Ryan returns after an assignment and encounters a beautiful stranger, he isn’t only surprised, he’s also instantly intrigued.
Hannah Bright is a breath of fresh air, and Ryan is soon completely consumed, unable to stop from falling for her. As the two grow closer, his instinct tells him something is amiss. Yet nothing could prepare him for what he discovers when he starts digging into her past.

Hannah spends her days painting, running her arts and crafts store…and hiding too many secrets. It’s why she won’t let the ruggedly handsome bodyguard get too close. But their chemistry is undeniable, and Hannah quickly finds herself caught up in a whirlwind romance with Ryan. He is peace personified, a balm to her battered soul. Yet the gorgeous, captivating man who has swept Hannah off her feet doesn’t even know who she really is. And the moment he finds out, both their lives are at risk

Review:

As you would expect from a Jodi Ellen Malpas novel, this is a rollercoaster of emotions, one that will leave you breathless.

We meet our characters at a time if personal change, where they’re taking life into their own hands and making the best of it. I read this at a time that for me, on a personal level was also taking my life into my own hands. Preparing to take a huge risk in my career, reading Hannah and Ryan’s story only emphasised the importance of following your own heart. Here are two beautiful characters, both physically and spiritually, who draw you into their own little paradise.

Whilst they create a haven for each other, JEM has done just that for her readers. Letting us take a nose dive into her vivid and brilliant imagination, so that we can explore these relationships without even leaving the house. It is the love she has as a writer for these characters that draws you, that wraps you up in their bubble and makes it so you never want to leave.

I laughed, I cried, I swooned and I fell hard for these characters. And not just Ryan and Hannah but the other characters as well. Because one of the things I love about JEM is that she knows how to create the best side characters, the funny roommate and quirky neighbour. No matter what happens in one of her novels, it is the characters that compel me the most.

I loved getting to know Ryan and Hannah, the dual narrative of the novel working very well at balancing the story out. Hearing both sides of the story, witnessing their descent into the never ending world of JEM was pure selfish indulgence. Because reading this book, at time when your personal world feels in chaos, was the perfect anchor in the storm. An escape from the stresses of everyday and getting lost in the “wonderland” that JEM creates.

I cannot wait to add the paperback to my JEM shelf on my bookcase, it is the perfect addition.

#BlogTour | THE DESIRE CARD by Lee Matthew Goldberg @LeeMatthewG (February 21st 2019) @BlackthornTours

Thank you very much to Isobel @ Blackthorn Book Tours and Lee Matthew Goldberg for providing a copy of the book to [K]

The review below is 100% honest and all of her own views.

Blurb:

Any wish fulfilled for the right price. That’s the promise the organization behind The Desire Card gives to its elite clients – but sometimes the price may be more menacing than anyone could ever imagine.

Harrison Stockton has lived an adult life of privilege and excess: a high-powered job on Wall Street fuels his fondness for alcohol and pills at the expense of a family he has no time for. Quite suddenly all of this comes crashing to a halt when he loses his job and at the same time discovers he almost certainly has only months left to live. Desperate, and with seemingly nowhere else left to turn, Harrison activates his Desire Card. What follows is a gritty and gripping quest that takes him from New York City to the slums of Mumbai and forces him to take chances, and make decisions, he never thought he’d ever have to face. When his moral descent threatens his wife and children, Harrison must decide whether to save himself at any cost, or do what’s right and break his bargain with the mysterious group behind The Desire Card.

Review:

Harrison is a man on a mission, from college he knew what he wanted. A high powered job, wife, family and the good things in life.  But unfortunately this high powered job whilst has given him the good things in life has also taken it over. No time for his family, he lives a life of excess, too much work, gluttony and lust for women, drugs and alcohol. When he gets sacked from his job, then discovers due to his lifestyle he only has a short time left to live, his severance package from his company includes the mysterious Desire Card.

What would you do if you had a card that could grant your every desire?Would you use it? Would you not? Would you think this is just a joke?Would you wonder what the catch is? Would you wonder about consequences?
These are the questions I was asking myself as I read this book. For starters I would like to think I’d never get myself into Harrison’s situation at all, but if that opportunity of a card that granted your desires appeared would I use it?

Despite not warming to Harrison, I did feel for him, sacked from his job, living with a disassociated family because of his lack of involvement in their lives due to his previous long hours at work, finding he only has a short time to live due to illness, he wants to live. But after a life of excess and entitlement he feels the way to do this is the way he’s gone about most things, throw money at it. When this doesn’t work, he finds himself in Mumbai on the search of his second chance.

I kept reading waiting for Harrison to have his epiphany and to stop leading such a hedonistic lifestyle of excess. Not to give too much away but things do change for Harrison where he has to make some very hard decisions. But will he make the right choices?

I found I was hooked from the first page and struggled to put this down as with each page turn I had to find out what happened next. This was my first book by Lee Matthew Goldberg but definitely will not be the last. Cannot wait for PREY NO MORE!

He lives near London and is married with one wife, one child and no pets.
