The heir to Martina Cole’s crown with a story of murder, the underworld, violence and treachery.

The Butlers are the kings of the East End

Vinny and Roy Butler are the apple of their mum’s eye. Queenie knows they can play dirty, but when it comes to family they look after business and make her proud. Nothing and no one can bring them down.

Brotherly love

But Vinny seems to have crossed the wrong person and his cards are marked. And with the brothers joined at the hip, Roy may just be in the firing line too…

Deadly rivals

One bloody night sets Vinny on the path of desperate vengeance, but will the Butlers emerge stronger than ever, or is the East End code of honour as good as dead?

Funny story – a year or so ago, I purchased a book called THE WRONGED. Loved the blurb for it and after my stint of reading the Kaz Phelps series by Susan Wilkins, I was ready for more gritty East End London gangland crime fiction. The horror when I went onto Goodreads to find out THE WRONGED is the THIRD book in a series featuring the Butler family.

On my shelf that booked lived until I finally pulled my finger out and purchased the first book in this series; THE TRAP. I had a sneaky suspiction that I was going to love this book from the get go. After my recent Martina Cole binge and reading about the Krays – I was ready for this book!

Vinny Butler is one of those characters we love to hate. He is Freddie Jackson. He is Aidan O’Hara and every other East End bad man that we read about in this genre. Vinny is cold, heartless, selfish, arrogant, dangerous…a real arsehole. But I couldn’t help but love his character as well! His unpredictable nature makes for an exciting read! Assuming the position as the man of the family, looking after an ever growing brood whilst becoming a force to be reckoned with, not too dissimilar with the Kray Twins (which interestingly, this book is set in the same time).

Short chapters and paragraphs and ever changing character perspectives keep the pace moving along for me that kept me engaged in all of the drama and the characters themselves. Each character for me was written perfectly. It could be easy to lose your way with how many to remember, but this is where Kim’s writing stands out.

This is my first Kimberley Chambers read and after devouring THE TRAP, I now need to get my hands on PAYBACK as soon as humanly possible!

I’ve been reading a fair amount of Martina Cole recently – so I wanted to branch out and read novels from similar authors. THE TRAP has been on my wish list for a long time now and I’m hoping to get around to reading it soon beans!

Survival. It’s all down to who you trust.

Aiden O’Hara has been head of the family since he was kid, and he’s going to keep it that way.

Jade Dixon is the one who watches his back. Mother of his son. The one who makes him invincible.

But Jade’s been in the game a lot longer than Aiden. She knows no one’s indestructible.

And when you’re at the top, that’s when you’ve got to watch the hardest.

Especially the ones closest to you . . .

I had an idea of what I was letting myself in for reading BETRAYAL. Martina Cole has this magic of being able to create characters and families, all with their own different traits, but blend together really well.

BETRAYAL is the second book of Martina’s I have read (I read THE TAKE early last year) and I cannot wait to devour more of her titles. There’s something about the raw, grittiness of the worlds she creates that pulls you in and pops you right in the middle of it.

Martina has the skill of creating characters that drive you crazy. Love and hate are so close in emotion and I felt this a lot with Aidan. I loved the way he fought from a young age to provide for his family as essentially the man of the house, to make a name for himself and ensure that his family was taken care of. What I didn’t like were how the power slowly starts to corrupt him and with that comes unsavoury behaviour towards both his girlfriend and his family.

The ending of this story came up quickly and out of the blue. It was that shock factor that I’m sure Martina had in mind all along. Obviously no spoilers from me, but it was the right way to end the story – given everything that took place before it.

Short, snappy chapters keep the pace of the story moving so not to get bored. This wasn’t an issue for me – I prefer shorter chapters. I find that I retain more of the story that way and don’t get bogged down with unnecessary content.

This novel did not disappoint. I was hoping for strong, no nonsense characters, a bit of violence, plenty of swearing and drama and I received that ten fold!

You can buy BETRAYAL from the following booksellers (and obviously many more…be kind to your local independant bookseller!)
