Never has a quote been so relevant to EVERY book worm around the globe (and further!). SO many books, but so little time! The same can also be said for book bloggers. We read that many books so we can share them with our audience, but we find ourselves short of time to write all our thoughts down in a comprehensive review 🙂

This brings us nicely to ‘Mini Review Monday’. A place where, to compliment our current content, we can share with you some of our initial thoughts on books we have been reading over the last week.

BERTIE’S GIFT by Hannah Coates
Published; October 20th 2016, Hodder & Stoughton

I received this book in a Goodreads Giveaway

This is a lovely heartwarming book about a cheeky little beagle called Bertie who once has been rehomed is trying to heal a hurt in his new adoptive family, causing mischief along the way.

The story flows well and I was eager to learn what was happening next with Bertie and friends.

This reminded me of stories similar to Babe, I think it may be the talking animals.

A great story for children and adults alike.

BUSTLES & BELLS: A Holiday Steampunk Anthology
Published; October 29th 2018, Bathory Gate Press

I received this in return for an honest review.

This was a lovely mix of festive short and slightly longer stories, previously I wouldn’t have said steampunk was one of my ‘go-to’ genres but after reading this anthology I will definitely pick it up more often!

I found I now have a new list of authors to look for on my next book visit 🙂

Published; July 4th 2018, Indie Published

I started reading this book as I found myself with time to spare but no paper book handy and I now wonder why I never picked this up sooner!

Once I started this story I found I could not put it down (and reading on a backlit kindle meant I could carry on reading in the middle of the night without disturbing the rest of the family) I had to keep reading to find out if Madeline was really regaining her memory from what happened to her when she was abducted by the Singing Woods Killer or was she just slowly getting more and more paranoid from this traumatic experience which has already left her with a rare psychological condition that means she can’t always trust what her mind is telling her?

This book was full of twists and turns and just as I thought I had it all worked out what was happening with the storyline there was another twist and my theories came to nothing.

I am definitely looking out for more from this author, perfect if you love a good thriller.

Have you read any of the books above? Let us know your thoughts! 🙂

#LettersFromTheHeart | #BookReview | A LAKE HOUSE HOLIDAY by Megan Squires @MeganSquires (16th October 2018, #IndieAuthor #IndiePublished)

Published; October 16th 2018, Indie Published

Sometimes you need to get away to find the place your heart calls home.

Jolene Carter lives in Merrylark Lake, a quaint town where neighbors are like family and vacationers become fast friends. With her dream of opening a downtown storefront on hold, Jolene volunteers wherever she can, whether it be at Cat’s Coffee Cart or the town’s annual tree lighting. It is while she’s tending to her neighbor’s vacation rental that Jolene meets Luke, a cowboy with a mustang rescue and a past he’s hoping to leave back at the ranch.

Luke Handley isn’t one to believe in holiday magic. That disappeared when his winter wedding was called off and his honeymoon was canceled. But the more time he spends in Merrylark, the more he’s convinced this magic exists. When Luke’s ex unexpectedly shows up as the other half to the lake house reservation, things get complicated. Luke knows all the magic in the world won’t clear up this misunderstanding. If he’s learned anything from Jolene, though, it’s that helping others is the most effective way to show love. With a surprise up his sleeve and a little help from his new Merrylark friends, Luke hopes he’s able to do just that.

I really wanted to read a festive book on the run up to Christmas so I picked this one by Megan Squires. I have read some of her work before and really enjoyed it so I thought it might be good to stick to what I know.

This was exactly what I needed to get me feeling Christmassy. Based in a little town called Merrylark, (even the town name promises a place of happiness) this is a tale of romance that grows around decorating the Christmas tree and turning the town lights on. Jolene and Luke are 2 lovable characters that you instantly like and as their love story develops you can’t help but hope they find a way to be together.

I found this to be very predictable (in a good way!), I knew exactly what was going to happen but I wanted something light hearted and warm and that was exactly what this was! I found myself lost in the story and the descriptions are so well written that the story comes to life in your imagination. From the decorations used on the tree and the beautiful town its a place and a story that you want to climb into and be a part of.

I really enjoyed this festive read and would highly recommend to someone just wanting to enjoy the run up to Christmas. Don’t get in expecting huge shock twists or anything dramatic and you won’t be disappointed. This really reminded me that I like Megan Squires and must read the rest of her work that I haven’t quite gotten around to yet.

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | MINE (A Hate Story) by Andie M.Long @AndieMichelle (May 19th 2017, #IndiePublished #IndieAuthor)

MINE (A Hate Story) by Andie M.Long
Published; May 19th 2017, Indie Published

I had my life all planned out, but in the blink of an eye it was gone. I lost my baby, my husband, my happy ever after.

So I made another plan…

Destroy the man who ruined it all. Edward Bonham. With his perfect wife and perfect life. Why should he be allowed to keep everything I’ve been denied?

Years have passed; they think they’re safe. They think no one remembers. They think all is forgiven. But I will never forgive, I will never forget, and one day, retribution will be MInE.

You can never fully appreciate how quickly time flies by until you pick up a book to read that you purchased at an author signing back in APRIL and it’s now DECEMBER!!

I had the pleasure of meeting Andie at the Tattooed Bad Boys author signing back in April at York Racecourse. A day dedicated to authors who know how to write a bad boy…and you’ve guessed it, mostly tattooed 😉 after speaking with Andie about her works, I decided to take a punt on MINE.

Everything about the blurb stood out to me. A woman who loses everything and in a moment of clarity decides to make a choice to ruin those responsible and my word does she accomplish her plans and then some!!

This story has more twists and turns than an English country lane! Just as you think you have understood where each character fits into the overriding arc – you are hit with another revelation which changed my feelings towards the characters at each stage! MINE is certainly one of those stories that messes with your head…but in the best possible way!

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | BUY MY SOUL (Sixty Days #2) by Jade West @jadewestauthor ‏(December 8th 2018, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

BUY MY SOUL (Sixty Days #2) by Jade West
Published; December 8th 2018, Indie Published

My sixty days begin here.

The beautiful monster holds my body and soul in his brutal fingers.
I’m his to use. His to dominate. His to command like a puppet on a stage for dirty eyes across the dark web.

I shouldn’t want this.

Shouldn’t want him.

Shouldn’t want to take every dark instruction from his lips and give him my everything.

But I do.

It should be about the money. About saving my sister from certain doom and bailing us both out of financial misery.

It should be about forging a new life, a new world for the pair of us once my sixty days are served.

But it’s not.

Not anymore.

It’s about him.

“Warning. Part two ramps up a little from book one. As always, this is from Jade West’s imagination, complete with layer upon layer of inherent dirtiness. You have been warned.”

A little?! Book two is nastier, filthier, sexier, grubbier and I loved every minute of it. This book pushed my reading and taste boundaries to the point of being see through, and it made me question everything, but I loved this book!

Jade’s work is not for the faint hearted. She really does push the romance genre as far as she can and explores situations that most people have never even thought about (I’ll never look at pasta the same way!!), but does it with such style you can enjoy it for what it is…a work of fiction.

Again told through dual POV, you really start to dig a little more deeper into the mindset of both Paige and Brandon, giving them more depth than we had in the previous instalment. We start to see a completely different side to Paige. She has now accepted her fate for the next sixty days and is able to submit fully to Brandon, while we then start to see cracks appear in Brandon’s behaviour with Paige. A behaviour that is quickly noticed by others which paves a dangerous path for them both.

Once again I was left with a cliffhanger ending, which although you could see coming, it still excited me to read the words and left me with that feeling of wanting to fight someone for the next book!! Jade truly is a master of words and I cannot wait to read the conclusion to Brandon & Paige’s story. If January 2019 could hurry itself along – that would be grand!

#BlogTour | #BookReview | #IncidentReport | WASP LATITUDES (DI Will Harlan #2) BY Allan Watson (August 30th 2018, Indie Published #IndieAuthor @BOTBSPublicity)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of WASP LATITUDES, the latest DI Will Harlan novel by the awesome Allan Watson.

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Sarah Hardy and of course the awesome Allan Watson who gifted me an early copy of WASP LATITUDES. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

Against a background of brutal attacks on people and property by a rag-tag group of homeless men whom the media quickly dub Berserkers, DI Will Harlan is juggling with a head-in-a-bucket patricide, a lethal wife-swapping session, a sex-tape scandal involving the Royal Scottish National Orchestra – and perhaps most discomfiting of all – a spate of late night phone calls from his favourite serial killer, Howie Danks.

As the wife-swapping investigation spirals into a glut of cold-blooded slayings carried out by a mysterious pair of killers known as the Wasp Queen and the Priest, Harlan has to look into the past where a cold case may contain uncomfortable answers. But it’s in the present where the real danger lies as he follows a twisted path of mind control and madness leading to a cruel land some call the Wasp Latitudes.

So, want to know what I thought?

After coming down from the high of reading HEART SWARM (the first in the DI Will Harlan series), I was ready to get back into the insane life of DI Will Harlan and his team.

Allan did not disappoint. WASP LATITUDES is the most incredible, outrageous, unbelievable – but believe police procedural book. Did I enjoy every page of this book? Abso-friggin-lutely!! I found myself sometimes laughing and gasping at the same time. Both at how completely out of this world and shocking some of the scenes are. This book doesn’t have the gore factor that HEART SWARM had, and for that I am grateful, as it gave me time to catch my breath.

You can certainly get away with reading this book as a standalone, but I find which most police procedural series, it’s better to start at the beginning so you can fully immerse yourself into the world and the characters. This book does mention snippets from the previous novel – but it’s enough that if you go into this book blind, you aren’t going to miss anything major.

I cannot wait to read the next instalment and see what is in store for Will…and Cara…and Trixie! I think I’ve fallen in love with Trixie! She is one of the new additions to Will’s team and is eager to please. I get the same vibe about her that I do with Paula McIntyre from the Carol Jordan & Tony Hill series written by Val McDermid. I really do hope that she comes in her own more in the next instalments.

Alternatively, give me a Trixie novella any day of the week!

About Allan Watson;

Allan Watson is a writer whose work leans towards the dark end of the fiction spectrum. He is the author of seven novels – Dreaming in the Snakepark, Carapace, The Garden of Remembrance, 1-2-3-4, Monochrome, Heart Swarm and Wasp Latitudes.

In between the books, Allan wrote extensively for BBC Radio Scotland, churning out hundreds of comedy sketches, in addition to being a regular contributor for the world famous ‘Herald Diary’.

He occasionally masquerades as a composer/musician, collaborating with crime writer Phil Rickman in a band called Lol Robinson with Hazey Jane II whose albums have sold on four different continents (Antarctica was a hard one to crack)

Allan lives and works in Glasgow, Scotland, but has never worn the kilt or eaten a deep fried Mars Bar. He also once spent three days as a stand-in guitarist for the Bay City Rollers, but he rarely talks much about that…

#RisqueReads | #CoverReveal | CRANK (Devils Highwaymen Nomads #1) BY Claire C.Riley @ClaireCRiley #IndieAuthor #IndiePublished

CRANK (Devils Highwaymen Nomads #1) by Claire C.Riley

I found my deliverance in the form of a bottle of whiskey and a woman named Hope.

Hope was the opposite of everything I stood for and believed in; she was innocent and pure and beautiful in a way that was soul deep, yet I couldn’t help falling for her. We only had one night—just mere moments in a lifetime really, but it was enough to change me forever.

Maria tasted like venom and looked like sin. She was beautiful and poisonous. She was dangerous—way more than I knew at the time, and she never pretended to be anything but my worst nightmare.

I never stood a chance.

Whiskey was bad for me, but in the end, Maria was probably worse.

I was young, too young to have seen the things I had. On the run from my past. Chasing my nightmares away with sex and booze and praying to any god that might be listening to finish me off sooner rather than later.

The day our worlds collided was the day that everything came apart. Our lives were set on a path that none of us could change.

Maria was my Demon.

And whiskey was my escape.

But Hope? She was my redemption

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | KILLER QUEEN (Painted Faces #2) by L.H. Cosway @LHCosway ‏(October 20th 2014, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

KILLER QUEEN (Painted Faces #2) by L.H. Cosway
Published; October 20th 2014, Indie Published

Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome…

Come inside The Glamour Patch club to see the star of our show, Miss Vivica Blue.

Do you want to read my diary you nosy little devils? Have a glass of champagne (you’ll need it) and get comfortable because you’re in for some crazy shenanigans brought to you straight from the horse’s mouth.

I can be whatever you want me to be: boy, girl, a little bit of both.

If you have a problem with a man in a dress then best be off with you. If males in make-up give you the willies, then I’ll say au revoir and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

So, who are we left with? Ah, a fine collection of curious souls. I want to tell you a tale of love, because those are the most glorious kind. I want to tell you about real love, a love that transcends labels and gender stereotypes.

The moment I first laid eyes on my Freda I knew that we were kindred. Well okay, I also knew I wanted to get into her pants, but that’s beside the point. My world was a grey place. I was at my lowest ebb. Then she came along and patches of colour began to spring forth. One day the daffodils were yellow and before I knew it, colour was everywhere, lighting up my life.

Love is not about how we appear on the outside, it’s about the soul contained within.

Our story was not a conventional one, but it was ours, and that’s what made it shine.

I first came across L H Cosway when myself and my fellow P Turner *S* were preparing for RARE18 in London, I read the novel PAINTED FACES and instantly fell in love with L H Cosway, these characters and Dublin. Later in the year we attended the Four Brits Book Fest in Oxford and had the pleasure of meeting L H Cosway again. It was here that I came across KILLER QUEEN, another novel in the PAINTED FACES universe and I knew that I just had to read this.

Fred and Nicholas are by far one of my all time favourite fictional couples, I love all facets of them, from Fred’s Irish charm and sarcastic nature to Nicholas’s femininity and devilish good looks. Everything about this couple drew me in and reading KILLER QUEEN, the story of their relationship from Nicholas’s perspective was a huge draw for me.

Of course after reading PAINTED FACES I had very high expectations from L H Cosway, could she pull off this story again from a different angle and still make me an emotional wreck? The answer is yes. I don’t know what it is about these characters but they appeal to me on a level I’ve never felt before. I can relate to Fred in a way that I think a lot of readers relate to female characters, she feels completely real and the relationship between her and Nicholas is beautiful on every level.

KILLER QUEEN gives us an insight into Nicholas’s character, showing us the darkest recesses of himself and the lightness that Fred brings into his world. Sure he has a troubled past, one that has shaped him into a true gentleman, but he is attractive because he knows he is flawed. A handsome man, with the body of an Adonis, he has the confidence to be himself and give us Vivica Blue. I was attracted to both sides of his character and enjoyed seeing how he flows so easily between the two personas from his point of view.

L H Cosway has created two characters that are truly magnificent, they’re entirely human, flawed and utterly beautiful. KILLER QUEEN cemented for me the love story between them and made me fall even more in love. Here we have a writer who has flawlessly created a set of characters that appeal to all audiences, set in the beauty of Dublin and you can see from her writing the love she has for the characters.

I am unashamedly biased, I felt so strongly for Fred and Nicholas after reading PAINTED FACES that I knew I would love KILLER QUEEN. What I didn’t anticipate was just how much. For me this novel has become my all time favourite, I love these characters and am a massive fan of L H Cosway’s talent. Never one to normally have a strong emotional reaction to a novel, I admit that reading this I did shed tears of happiness for the characters. The book hangover I’ve experienced before is nothing to what I am feeling now that I’ve read the last page. I think this book lover will be in a state of despair for a while and I couldn’t be more thrilled, because KILLER QUEEN is worth every penny, tear and hangover.

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | SELL MY SOUL (Sixty Days #1) by Jade West @jadewestauthor ‏(July 23rd 2018, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

SELL MY SOUL (Sixty Days #1) by Jade West
Published; July 23rd 2018, Indie Published

Sixty days of total submission.
No safe words. No limits. No holds barred.
Sixty days of your body being used and abused and pushed to extremes.

Then you were free to go, no further dues, thanks and goodbye.
And your bank balance looked seriously healthy for the experience.

I should never have been tempted. Not for a second.
I should never have even thought about putting myself up for sale for sixty days, not after hearing the brutal tales of what happens to you.
But I had to.
My sister desperately needed the money. Needed Me. Needed more than I could ever give her.

I’d just never have guessed in a million years that soon enough I’d be needing him.
The beautiful stranger.
The dangerous monster.
The guy who’d be responsible for my pleasure and pain and everything between for sixty days straight.
And the man who’d want my very soul along with my body.

No holds barred doesn’t even come close to his requirements.
But I’m willing to give him everything.

First full-length novel in a trilogy.

‘As always, this is a Jade West novel. You have been warned.’

This disclaimer at the very beginning of this book should say it all really! For those not familiar with Jade, she takes romance fiction to the next level. And by that I mean a few levels below the surface where it’s dark and grim! Her novels are not for the faint hearted and if you like your romance fiction with rainbows, unicorns and chocolates…this is NOT the book for you!

BAIT was my first venture into Jade’s brain and I started to worry after a while. It is one of the darkest romance books I have ever read, and I LOVED every minute of it. I still refer to it now as ‘hardcore kiss chase’ to keep it safe for work…or those of a nervous disposition 😉

SELL MY SOUL is the latest book from Jade and the first of a new trilogy; Sixty Days. As the blurb already suggests, sixty days of total submission and in return, your bank balance will be greatly rewarded.

Paige is a young woman. Attends college, has a small group of friends, one previous boyfriend and a sister who struggles with an abusive partner and takes drugs to self medicate. When the whispers of a previous ‘Sixty Day’ participant reach Paige’s ears, she is keen to take part as a way to help her sister out of a large drug debt.

Brandon is like most of Jade’s male characters, a complete arse, arrogant, assertive, aggressive and utterly handsome. He is sadistic, manipulative and has a way with women that get them eating out the palm of his hand. It’s frustrating to read how Paige was so easy to submit to Brandon, but then I wonder what I would do put in her situation? How far would you go?

Told through dual POV, you really start to get into the mindset of both characters, but with a cliffhanger ending, I was left desperate for more! To the point where I was ready (and still ready!) to fight someone for the next instalment!

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | THE STORY OF ME (Carnage #2) by Lesley Jones @LesleyKJones (July 31st 2014, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

THE STORY OF ME (Carnage #2) by Lesley Jones
Published; February 14th 2014, Indie Published

When your world, your life and all of your hopes and dreams for the future are ripped out from under you, how do you go on?

Death without dying is not only the most painful kind of death, it’s also the most painful kind of life and I don’t know if I’m strong enough to live it.

I spend my lonely days and nights trying to make sense of what my life has become. Do I have the strength to move forward into the light, or should I just let the darkness take me?

I’m Georgia Rae Layton McCarthy and this is the story of me, just me.

I’m no longer a part of an us, it’s just me.

By myself.

Ok. It’s been about six months now since I read THE STORY OF US, which I think is a big enough gap of time to mend both my brain and heart after the events of this first book. That book left me in a sobbing mess. Ugly crying was taking place for a long time afterwards. After the crying stopped, I was left with so many questions about what happened to Georgia next? What about her family? Most importantly…what about Cam?!

THE STORY OF ME picks up pretty much after the events of the first book and all of our questions from the first book are finally answered! I really don’t want to give ANY spoilers for this book as it will take away the enjoyment of the journey we go on with Georgia. You need to be able to read this book with a completely open mind.

There are a couple of scenes in this book which have divided opinion and when you read them, you will understand! However for me, I thought they were true to the emotions of the situation and although some have said they are out of character…we have to think about what happened in book one and ask ourselves how we would have behaved if we were in their shoes?

THE STORY OF ME gives me more drama than an episode of all the soaps combined! It’s a rollercoaster of emotion and just when we think something is starting to go right….BAM! You are head butted and seeing stars and left wondering where that came from!

Whilst not giving me the same Kardashian ugly cry as first book, I thoroughly enjoyed THE STORY OF ME and was left satisfied with the ending.

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | WILL (Not You Average British Romance #2) by Kerry Heavens @kerryheavens (November 1st 2016, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

WILL (Not Your Average British Romance #2) by Kerry Heavens
Published; November 1st 2016, Indie Published

Will Middleton has no clue how much I want him.
He looks at me like I’m an angel,
And all I can think about is how he would look tied to my bed.
He’s the perfect gentleman.
Amazing considering he’s related to The Spencer Ryan.
He is everything Spencer is not. Sensitive, considerate, and unassumingly handsome.
I’d like to show him that’s a good thing.
But he broke my heart once,
and I don’t know if I can let him do it again.

Mags Goldsmith is a beautiful, confident heiress and she seems to want me.
Although she really shouldn’t. I’m not what she needs.
She’s a goddess. And when I say goddess,
I mean erotica writing siren, who knows more than one use for a riding crop.
Everything I thought I knew about her has been rewritten,
And now she’s got me tied up in knots.
She’s everything I’ve ever wanted and more,
I just have to prove I’m worthy.

This is not your average British romance.
It’s a tale of second chances, strap-ons, and of course sex oranges,
All bound up and tied to a bedroom door.
It’s love in the real world,
where bad boys are a dime a dozen.
And it takes a real man to be a good boy.

WILL is the sequel to the very saucy and delectable SPENCER by the author Kerry Heavens. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this author at a couple of book events this year, each time ignoring the limit I’ve given myself and given in to buying more of her delicious novels.

The characters in WILL were already introduced to us in SPENCER, so we already know a little about the history between our lead man Will and the lovely Mags from there, however this novel takes things to a whole new level. To say things hot up between our couple is an understatement and we definitely see a side to these characters we were not expecting.

I loved how Heavens brought these two into the limelight, we still got glimpses of Spencer and Jax, but for the most part our world here revolves around Will and Mags. A couple whose history looks set to repeat itself but with a few more kinks along the way.

The possibility that these two beautiful souls might be able to make a second chance work entices us to read on, we want them to get that second chance, to make amends for the mistakes of their past. Again the path to love isn’t smooth for Will and Mags, with outside forces both pushing them together and possibly pulling them apart.

Heavens brilliantly brings these two together, with excellent writing and so much passion in her style that you would find it hard to not enjoy this novel. It is without a doubt one of my favourite novels of the year and I have officially become a massive Kerry Heavens fan. So much so, that I cannot wait to read the rest of her work.
