#BlogTour | #BookReview | #IncidentReport | UNSPOKEN TRUTHS (DI Gus McGuire #5) by Liz Mistry (October 29th 2018, Bloodhound Books @Bloodhoundbook)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of UNSPOKEN TRUTHS, the latest DI Gus McGuire novel by the wonderful Liz Mistry!

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Emma @ Bloodhound Books and of course the awesome Liz Mistry who gifted me an early copy of UNSPOKEN TRUTHS. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

Unspoken Truths FINAL .jpg

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

In Unspoken Truths, DI Gus McGuire and his team navigate a complex web of intrigue, espionage and murder. Set in Bradford, Manchester and on Saddleworth Moor, Gus is pushed to his physical and psychological limits.

First a rural train between Manchester and Bradford is deliberately derailed by a vehicle with a boot filled with drugs, then a woman’s tortured body is discovered in Keighley. When Gus’ brother-in-law goes missing, the investigation becomes personal. As he battles against the storms of the Beast from the East, Gus must uncover the links between the dead woman, a pharmaceutical company in Manchester and a research facility in Northern Cyprus, as well as the disappearance of his brother in law. With the body count increasing, Gus sets Compo loose on the Dark Web – how will Gus react when he discovers that things are not as they seem?

Meanwhile, DS Alice Cooper faces extreme danger in prison and, as the evidence piles up against her, Gus and his team’s loyalties are pushed to the limit.

Can Gus stop the blueprint for a deadly bio weapon from falling into the wrong hands? Can he solve a series of murders and track down a psychotic killer? Never before has Gus faced such a demanding test.

So, want to know what I thought?

Ever since I finished book four in the series; UNCOMMON CRUELTY – I knew I HAD to read what happens next!

A great start for me as this book picks up directly after events in the previous book and we are placed right in the centre of ‘The Beast from the East’ which was a very real and deadly snow storm that made it’s way over to England earlier this year. Living so close to where the story is set in Bradford, Liz transported me straight into the action and gave me the same chills I remember!

There are two incidents at the start of this book which pave the way for the story and work perfectly alongside each other. Firstly we delve deeper into Alice’s time in prison and it’s a pretty grim to say the least. Outside factors are playing a part in her suffering and it’s written in such a way that makes the reader uncomfortable, without it being ‘in your face’ and over the top for the sake of the shock factor. Secondly we have the derailment of the train. An incident which opens up a box of scandal, conspiracy and secrets which shocks Gus and his team as they scramble for answers. Both incidents have their place in this book and with the pacing a crime thriller deserves, the reader is taken on a hell of a ride!

Although this book stands on its own as a standalone, I would highly recommend reading the previous books in the series. I feel I’m continuing to connect with these characters as their stories progress and I worry whether I’d feel the same going into this book blind.

That said…bring on the next book please! I shall be sat waiting impatiently 🙂

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

DI Gus McGuire and his team are called in to investigate the disappearance of a teenage boy after his parents return from a weekend away, to find their home trashed and their son missing.

But that is just the beginning.

As the investigation unfolds, Gus must discover what links a violent bikers’ gang, a Muslim youth group and a fundamentalist American based Christian church.

Alongside this, two cases from the past come back to haunt DI Gus McGuire and his DS, Alice Cooper.

Gus has a lot to juggle, but will he cope?

Uncommon Cruelty is the fourth in the DI Gus McGuire series set in Bradford West Yorkshire and is a gritty, Northern Noir read.

So, want to know what I thought?;

Another book feautring DI Gus McGuire. Set in Bradford (my home town!). Police procedural. Unexplained deaths. This book had everything I needed from the very get go and it did not disappoint!

There are so many different ‘plays’ in this book, you would think it difficult to keep up with everything that is going on. What Liz has been able to do is bring the same magic from previous books to allow for an organic style of story telling. The pacing is just right that we follow the action throughout – but don’t get bored or lost in quieter moments.

Each character was written extrememly well and I made a connection with them all. Liz was able to get into our killers mind, find what makes him tick and exploit that to make for some pretty compelling reading. It was uncomfortable at times to read, but this was deliberate in a way to make us both despise the killer, but also on some level – understand what their motives were.

What did grab me was the twist towards the end of book. It shocked me, which is no bad thing, but it helped bring closure to a past crime which until now was always dismissed as a tragic accident.

A cracking read and after the extract from the next book at the end ….I’m keen beans to get my hands on the next installment!

#BlogTour | #BookReview | UNTAINTED BLOOD (DI Gus McGuire #3) by Liz Mistry @LizCrimeWarp (August 29th 2017, Bloodhound Books @Bloodhoundbook)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for UNTAINTED BLOOD – the lastest in the DI Gus McGuire series by Liz Mistry.

I would firstly like to say a rather big thank you to the amazing Sarah Hardy, Bloodhound Books and Liz Mistry who gifted me an early copy of UNTAINTED BLOOD. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

Untainted Blood final

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

In a city that is already volatile, tensions mount after a Tory MP in Bradford Central is discredited leaving the door open for the extreme right-wing candidate, Graeme Weston, to stand in the resultant by-election.

However, Graeme Weston is not what he appears to be and with secrets jeopardising his political career, he must tread very carefully.

Meanwhile, a serial killer targets Asian men who lead alternatives lifestyles and metes out his own form of torture.

As DI Gus McGuire’s team close in, the deranged killer begins to unravel and in an unexpected twist the stakes are raised for Gus.

Are the murders linked to the political scandals or is there another motive behind them?

DI Gus McGuire and his team are back and this might be their toughest case yet.

So, you want to know what I think?

The first thing that drew me to this book was the similarities in subject matter as STREETS OF DARKNESS by A.A.Dhand. Both books feature pretty tough storylines – particulartly in regards to politics and how Bradford is a city divided. UNTAINTED BLOOD for me gave me the same feelings as STREETS OF DARKNESS where the policitcal views and unrest within the city are very real and you can certainly feel them when you move around Bradford.

With that, what Liz was able to do is create a truly believable and uncomfortable story, which I enjoyed every page of!

The story’s main antagonist; Graeme Weston is one of those characters that you just want every bad thing to happen to. His political views, the way he treats his wife – the guy is just plain awful and that in itself is a credit to Liz’s writing. I find it a skill for an author to write a character in such a way that evokes such strong feelings!

As with most series, it certainly helps to read the others in the series and unfortunately this was my first venture into Gus McGuire and his team and straight off the bat I felt at a disadvantage as there is a back story there and events which have taken place which have shaped the characters in UNTAINTED BLOOD. As a reader, you can tell that the relationship between Gus and his team are strong, but also strained – it was really enjoyable to read their development through the book.

UNTAINTED BLOOD is a cracking read and a page turner in every sense. I would love to go back and read the first two books in the series as this will surely help build a clearer picture, but if you like the mystery behind characters and story – then this can certainly still be enjoyed as a standalone novel!

I seem to be a little obsessed with books based in Bradford at the mo! I have STREETS OF DARKNESS to thank for that! So I was really keen to get involved with the latest DI Gus McGuire novel by Liz Mistry.

This is the third outing for this character – so I feel at a small disadvantage that I don’t have the full history and background to the characters, but in a weird way – I find that a thrill as I am constantly asking questions. I’m really keen to get stuck and let you know how it all unfolds.

I’m looking forward to taking part in the blog tour when it hits the blog on 4th September. Make sure to check out the other great blogs that are also taking part on the tour below;
