Excerpt:

“Let’s eat before we leave. I’m sure there’s quite the spread downstairs.”

“Rich people breakfast?” I ask.

She furrows a brow for a few seconds. “Yes. I suppose so.” Rolling away, she swings her legs around and stands up, stretching like a cat.

“Do you eat rich people breakfast every morning?” My curiosity has been piqued.

After a long yawn, she cocks her head to the side, lips slightly twisted. “Shredded Wheat with cut-up banana and almond milk. Is that a rich person’s breakfast?”

I sit up, doing a bit of my own stretching, loving the way her gaze roams along my bare chest, her lips parting ever so slightly. “No. I think that’s a solid middle-class breakfast.”

“Middle. That’s average. Average is good, right?”

“There’s nothing average about you, Henna.” I stand, following her into the bedroom.

“I’m going to shower quickly, and by quickly I mean I need an hour. Do you have an hour?”

“To shower with you?” I try to play it cool, like I’m serious.

I’m a little serious.

The color leaves her face. “Oh, um …” She twists her fingers together, drawing her shoulders inward.

“I’m kidding.”

A little kidding.

Henna’s posture relaxes as her cheeks pink up again. “We could.” Her gaze darts around the room before landing on mine for two seconds only to wander around the room again.

“My clothes are at my hotel. I’ll shower there. I need to get going.”

A slow sigh deflates her chest as she tries on a smile that misses the confident mark by a few centimeters. “Okay.”

“But thanks for the offer.” I wink.

More color paints her cheeks, and it looks stunning on her. “I kinda sorta thought we’d have sex last night, but we didn’t, and that’s fine, but now I don’t know what comes next.”

Does that make me the world’s biggest idiot for not taking what she was planning on offering? Or does that make me a gentleman? I’ve already fucked her a hundred different ways in my head, so I’m going to shy away from the gentleman label.

“How about you put my number in your phone and I’ll call you later today? That feels like a good next, don’t you think?”

Henna nods and turns, walking toward the bedroom door. Digging through her purse, she retrieves her phone. When she pulls it out, a string of three condoms comes out with it. “Oh jeez.” Quickly snatching them off the floor, she shoves them back into her purse.

I don’t respond because I’m not sure what the correct response should be.

“I was conceived at Coachella.” She hands me her phone with the contact screen open, ready for my information.

Taking her phone, I give her an expectant look, but she withholds all elaboration.

“And by conceived, you mean physical conception, not merely an idea kind of conception?” I hand her phone back and give her mine.

“In the shadows behind a stage. I know more details than most people should actually know about the moment they were conceived.” She lifts a shoulder in a small shrug. “But Juni is my best friend. She’s the absolute coolest mom ever, and the story of how she met my dad is my favorite story ever.”

I nod as she keeps her chin tipped toward the screen to my phone. “Why is that?” I take my phone back when she holds it out to me.

“Yin Yang. Opposites. Laws of the universe.” She wears a satisfied smile. “My parents were temporary. I was permanent.” Holding out her arms, she inspects her henna tattoos as if seeing them for the first time. “My mom had henna tattoos on her body when she met my dad. Henna grows in intensity over a few days before fading to nothing. It’s magical and beautiful and then it’s gone. My parents say that about their love for each other. It grew quickly into something deep and intense, but over time it faded. Their love—like most everything in life—was temporary.”

“We’re temporary.”

Her empty stare shifts to meet my gaze and she nods. “Don’t sweat it. Everything is temporary. But today…” she walks into my chest, and my arms wrap around her as she looks up at me “…we should be at our brightest, our most intense.”

LICK (Stage Dive #1) by Kylie Scott
Published; November 21st 2013, Pan Macmillan

19352917.jpg

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure as hell never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is for certain, being married to rock and roll’s favourite son is sure to be a wild ride.

LICK is another book that *M* has been telling me about now for FAR too long! And in the spirit of trying new authors, I could put it off no longer. Let me tell you, I devoured this book in an AFTERNOON! This should give you an indication of two things…first, what a quick/easy read this it (which is no way me slating the book!) and secondly, how addictive the story is! I’m sure we’ve all had fantasies of what would happen if we were in Evelyn’s shoes! (FYI…Corey Taylor or Dave Grohl!)

This is the first book in the Stage Dive series and it starts with a bang! Evelyn wakes up in her hotel room after a few too many tequilas celebrating her 21st birthday to discover she has married the guitarist of one of the biggest bands in the world! Realising that she can’t remember any of it, conversations are had as to whether the marriage would continue.

What follows is a ‘will they/won’t they’ story as each of them are trying to work out what to do next. Evelyn is thrown straight into David’s world and it’s overwhelming to say the least! Although she is only 21, Evelyn carries herself well and isn’t portrayed as some meek, mild and naive young woman. She carries herself well and compliments David very well.

Despite his status, David isn’t an arrogant rocker. He is actually a very sweet person, who knows what he wants, but asks permission rather than demanding it! He’s not all sweetness all the time. There are moments where you want to wag a finger in his face and give him a stern talking to – but he already knows the next step and is walking it before we can catch up.

LICK was a great introduction to the series and I’m keen to meet the remaining members of the band throughout the series!

BEAUTIFUL OBLIVION (The Maddox Brothers #1) by Jamie McGuire
Published; July 1st 2014, Atria Books

The Beautiful Disaster phenomenon continues in the first heart-pounding new adult romance in The Maddox Brothers series.

Fiercely independent Camille “Cami” Camlin gladly moved on from her childhood before it was over. She has held down a job since before she could drive, and moved into her own apartment after her freshman year of college. Now tending bar at The Red Door, Cami doesn’t have time for much else besides work and classes, until a trip to see her boyfriend is cancelled, leaving her with her first weekend off in almost a year.

Trenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. His friends wanted to be him, and women wanted to tame him, but after a tragic accident turned his world upside down, Trenton leaves campus to come to grips with the crushing guilt.

Eighteen months later, Trenton is living at home with his widower father, and works full-time at a local tattoo parlour to help with the bills. Just when he thinks his life is returning to normal, he notices Cami sitting alone at a table at The Red.

As the baby sister of four rowdy brothers, Cami believes she’ll have no problem keeping her new friendship with Trenton Maddox strictly platonic. But when a Maddox boy falls in love, he loves forever – even if she is the only reason their already broken family could fall apart.

In the first instalment of The Maddox Brothers series, readers can experience the rush of reading Beautiful Disaster for the first time, all over again.

So for a few years now I have been a fan of Jamie Mcguire and her Maddox Brothers series, yet it is only recently I got my hands on a copy of Beautiful Oblivion.

In this story we meet Trenton Maddox and Cami Camlin, an unlikely couple whose story is far from simple. In true Maddox style this brother doesn’t do anything by halves nor does he refrain from fighting for the ones he loves.

A love triangle is the core of the story, leaving our heroine in an emotional state throughout the majority of the novel. But this is just another example of Mcguire’s talented writing. We are drawn into Cami and Trenton’s world, praying to the romance novel Goddesses that this couple can make things work.

I loved every minute reading their story, delving into the world according to the Maddox boys completely and with an open mind. Mcguire knows these characters inside and out, clearly shown here in this novel. As much as we love Cami, it is for me Trenton that drew me in. This is a Maddox brother who is not afraid to be himself, not afraid to pursue who he wants and will fight in Maddox style for his girl.

As a reader we fall hopelessly in love with these two characters, we want them to work things out and we read on in pure anticipation of those final moments between them. At the heart of this novel is a love story, a story that sees our lead couple take a uneven path but ultimately make the right decision for them.

Always confident in Mcguire’s ability to create a world where the Maddox brothers captivate you completely, I could not put this novel down. I devoured the story and loved every minute I spent with Cami and Trenton.

It was hate at first sight…

Affton

I hated Cable James McCaffrey.

He was entitled, spoiled, a user…and an addict.

He was out of control and didn’t bother trying to hide it.

He had everything anyone could want but still seemed miserable and lost.

Every move he made, every mistake he stumbled his way through, rubbed me the wrong way. However, I couldn’t stop myself from trying to save him from himself when no one else would. In the sweltering heat of the summer, Cable taught me that having it all means nothing if you can’t have the one thing you want more than anything else.

Cable

I was obsessed with Affton Reed.

She was rigid, uptight, and no fun. There was something about her innate goodness that called to me.

She acted like she was above all the normal faults and failures that clung to the rest of us like the scent of smoke after a fire.

I was infatuated with her, but that didn’t stop me from acting like she didn’t exist.

In the scorching heat of summer, Affton taught me that there is always a way back from the brink of despair. She showed me that the trick to having it all was realizing that it was already there, in my hands. All I had to do was hold onto it.

The road to recovery is full of twists and turns no matter who is in the driver’s seat.

I have *M* to thank for my ongoing adventure into the world of contemporary romance. Since attending RARE in London earlier this year, I have been reading some truly amazing indie authors.

It was the blurb for RECOVERED that peaked my interest. I’ve heard of Jay Crownover before and from what I’ve seen…her work is very well received. I can’t wait to get stuck in and let you know what I think!

FEAR YOU (Broken Love #2) by B.B. Reid
Published; May 11th 2015, Bebe’s Reads LLC

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00037]

What happens when she’s had enough?

Lake Monroe has given in to her childhood tormentor too many times. She knows it, he knows it, and even their enemies know it. When he returned after being found guilty of a crime he didn’t commit—a crime he thought she set him up for, he returned darker than ever, demanding her body and her submission. To survive him, she knew she had to give in to fear once more or suffer the deadly consequences…

But Lake experienced what it was like to submit to the dark and demanding boy who invaded her dreams. Now she’ll experience what it’s like to fight him.

What happens when he wants more?

Keiran Masters has a past that is both shocking and dark. Once enslaved, he now has demons he can’t escape—demons that have followed him for ten years, demons he blames his beautiful obsession for. He promised to make her pay. He promised to make her break…

But after Keiran had conquered her body and tasted her submission, he found a new addiction instead—one he has no intention of giving up.

As secrets unfold,
Identities are revealed,
Danger closes in,
And they both discover what it really means to fear…

FEAR YOU takes place immediately after the heart stopping cliffhanger at the end of FEAR ME and we are thrown straight back into the complex relationship between Lake and Keiran. A relationship that shouldn’t work! It’s destructive and nasty and all other negative descriptors – but then on other levels, it does work. This book definitely messes with your mind!

Lake upped her game in this book and becomes a stronger, more likable character to me than in FEAR ME. Yes, she still has her own demons – but she doesn’t tolerate any bullshit and stands her ground and tries to make her voice heard. I’m not sure I would have enjoyed this book as much if she carried on the same as in the first instalment.

The one thing we do get loads of in this book in answers! I had SO many questions at the end of FEAR ME and I was sure to learn the answers in FEAR YOU and I did just that. Some of it is hard to read. We learn more about Keiran’s past and how that past is very much his present. We start to understand why Keiran behaves the way he does. It doesn’t condone the way he acts, but at least we can see the why behind it.

I cannot wait to read the next books in this series. Book three; FEAR US focuses on the relation between Sheldon and Keenan. Book four; BREAKING LOVE focuses on Willow and Dash and then finally, book five; FEARLESS brings us full circle back to Lake and Keiran.

Just as a side note – If you are particularly sensitive to child abuse, torture and mental abuse – then this is probably a book you need to steer clear of. But if like me, you like to have your limits tested, then I think you will enjoy this!

FEAR ME (Broken Love #1) by B.B. Reid
Published; February 14th 2015, Bebe’s Reads LLC

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000035_00037]

I don’t believe in fairy tales and Prince Charming.

I believe in fear.

He taught me how to be afraid.

We first met on a playground on a wonderful summer day. It was the first time he hurt me and it wouldn’t be the last. For ten years, he’s been my tormentor and I’ve been his forbidden. But then he went away, and yet I was still afraid.

Now he’s back and wants more than just my tears. You see…he thinks I sent him away so now he wants revenge…and he knows just how to get it.

Warning: Fear Me contains sensitive themes.

Let’s get this out of the way – the blurb says it contains sensitive themes and it ain’t half wrong! If you are particularly sensitive to child abuse, torture and mental abuse – then this is probably a book you need to steer clear of.

If like me, you welcome the challenge of a book shocking/surprising you. Keiran is not your typical ‘bad boy’ – he’s horrific, nasty, dominant, arrogant…pretty much all of the negative descriptors you can think of, but then there’s that slither. That slither of ‘ooooh, so he’s not vile…’ and I started to feel for him. This book takes us on a series of flashbacks, so we fully understand the history between Keiran and Lake. The more I learnt, the more I felt for the characters.

Lake, on the other hand is just as complex as Keiran. She is pretty much broken by Keiran’s actions and taunts, but still retains that resilliance to take him on and not cower away. Thankfully BB didn’t make Lake another ‘oh my, look at me, I’m soooo innocent’ type of eighteen year old. She didn’t do that with any of the characters in this book. It was easy to forget sometimes that this is based in/around a high school!

FEAR ME is one of those books that you cannot tear your eyes away from the pages and as much as you hate Keiran, you can’t help but want the best for him too! I shall add him to the long list of book boyfriends that have ruined me!

MOST OF ALL YOU by Mia Sheridan

A broken woman . . .

Crystal learned long ago that love brings only pain. Feeling nothing at all is far better than being hurt again. She guards her wounded heart behind a hard exterior and carries within her a deep mistrust of men, who, in her experience, have only ever used and taken.

A man in need of help . . .

Then Gabriel Dalton walks into her life. Despite the terrible darkness of his past, there’s an undeniable goodness in him. And even though she knows the cost, Crystal finds herself drawn to Gabriel. His quiet strength is wearing down her defenses and his gentle patience is causing her to question everything she thought she knew.

Only love can mend a shattered heart . . .

Crystal and Gabriel never imagined that the world, which had stolen everything from them, would bring them a deep love like this. Except fate will only take them so far, and now the choice is theirs: Harden their hearts once again or find the courage to shed their painful pasts.

32854499

When you enjoy an author’s work and start to read the back catalogue sometimes it starts to feel repetitive. I was dreading that would be the case with Mia Sheridan. I have read most of her books now amd enjoyed them all so when I picked up Most Of All You, her first traditional published novel I was a bit nervous. I sbouldn’t have been though. It became the 2nd favourite of hers, Number 1 will always go to Archer.

When you read the prologue you know it’s going to be hard hitting. A little girl being dropped at a father’s who didn’t know about her and didn’t want her. This sets the standard of the story. Although it is a romance there are points that are very dark and would be hard for some people to read.

The characters are both very likeable and evoke alot of sympathy. Both Crysyal/Ellie and Gabriel have been through things that I could never imagine. There are points where your heart is in your mouth and you have to keep reading to know they are ok.

You know a story is going to rip your heart out when you get to page 200 and there is the perfect ending but the story still has over 100 pages to go. At this point you ask yourself can these people really take anymore? Those last 100 or so pages are fast paced and keep you sat at the edge of your seat as you can’t turn the pages fast enough.

Ultimately this is a love story with a will they/won’t they theme throughout but it’s interesting to read what they have to go through to believe they are good enough for each other.

Although I struggled at times with the dark sides of the story they do make it what it is and overall it is a great story that I really enjoyed. I am looking forward to reading more books by Mia who is becoming one of my favourite authors!

Come forth with an open mind, for an unconventional tale of love..

Dublin native Freda Wilson considers herself to be an acquired taste. She has a habit of making offensive jokes and speaking her mind too often. She doesn’t have the best track record with first impressions, which is why she gets a surprise when her new neighbour Nicholas takes a shine to her.

Nicholas is darkly handsome, funny and magnetic, and Freda feels like her black and white existence is plunged into a rainbow of colour when she’s around him. When he walks into a room he lights it up, with his quick wit and charisma. He is a travelling cabaret performer, but Freda doesn’t know exactly what that entails until the curtains pull back on his opening night.

She is gob-smacked and entirely intrigued to see him take to the stage in drag. Later on, Nicholas asks her if she would like to become his show assistant. Excited by the idea, she jumps at the chance. Soon she finds herself immersed in a world of wigs, make-up and high heels, surrounded by pretty men and the temptation of falling for her incredibly beautiful employer.

In this story of passion and sexual discovery, Nicholas and Freda will contend with jealousy, emotional highs and lows, and the kind of love that only comes around once in a lifetime.

** WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS **

Painted Faces by L H Cosway was started as part of the RARE18 Readathon that was held by the P Turners in January and I was not disappointed. Unfortunately, I couldn’t finish the book in one sitting, however I was not disappointed, as this was a story that needed to be cherished.

Instantly I became fond of Fred (Freda), our average Irish lady, who is both beautiful and honest. Her attraction to Nicholas, the stranger next door was tangible to say the least. Here is a handsome New Zealander who flirts outrageously with Fred as soon as they meet. Fred is a baker and all round sarcastic character who bounces brilliantly off Nicholas, the flamboyant, talented and handsome drag queen. Their instant connection for me was the core of this story and it is a remarkably beautiful story.

The emotional rollercoaster that they take, both separately and together kept me hooked, the chemistry between them sparking off the page, to my utter delight. I loved getting to know these characters, seeing Fred as this independent, witty, flirty young lady who is open minded. And this is perfect for Nicholas, a very mysterious young man, who is both beautiful inside and out. He goes against all stereotypes and I think it is this that pulled me into this story, this is what appeals to Fred. A girl who isn’t looking for a romance, but finds one in the most unlikely of places. I felt a connection to Fred on a level I haven’t in most female protagonists, she was your average girl. But there is something wonderfully un-average about her that I love. I related to her on so many levels that I felt she could be real.

Seeing their relationship develop, going through all the emotional highs and lows is an adventure itself. Nicholas is so strong but a troubled soul, the life he’s lead up to this point one not always consisting of rainbows and glitter, yet he never fails to put a smile on your face. With eyes that draw you in, the body of a Greek god and a voice from the heavens, any reader would be attracted to him. I could picture him on stage, his presence palpable.

I love that he is flawed, that he goes against all stereotypes and that Fred is the one who connects with him.Your heart breaks for him at the horror and ignorance he has faced, yet you grow to love him even more. There is something highly appealing to me as a reader to see a male protagonist who is both an alpha male and so in touch with his femininity. The two sides to this character are both beautiful and Cosway creates these characters amazingly.

Going against the stereotypes of a standard contemporary romance couple, Fred and Nicholas are refreshing to read. The sensuality, humour, friendship and loyalty between them is something I fell in love with, eager to read more and see how things turn out for this adorable couple. Cosway knows her characters perfectly, every little nuance and flaw, painting them in a light where you can see these and love them. I never wanted this story to end, I fell so in love with Fred and Nicholas.

Separate they are remarkable characters, together they are the one of the hottest literary couples for me. The intimacy between them is subtle, sweet, steamy and delicious, leaving you craving more. It is safe to say that this is a story that makes you think outside the gender norms, opens your mind to the possibilities of love and leaves you feeling at a loss with the turn of the last page.

I am so in love with these characters, that I know for a fact this will be a novel I will read again and again. Cosway has created characters that are completely unique, a couple that I could only dream of finding in real life and a man who encapsulates the fluidity of gender roles perfectly, he is the most delicious of book boyfriends, by far one of my favourites.

Thank you L H Cosway for giving us Fred and Nicholas.

** WARNING – CONTAINS SPOILERS **
Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover was gifted to me for Christmas by my fellow P Turner *L* and after hearing rave reviews by all the P Turner ladies, I decided that this book would be one, of a couple, to be read on a read-a-thon. Although I didn’t finish the book in 24 hours, I spent my New Year’s weekend engrossed in Ridge and Sydney’s story.
And what a story this is. Here is a couple that are unlike other couples from a romance novel, Ridge is a beautiful man, his character so well structured you cannot help but fall in love with him. The relationship between him and our heartbroken heroine Sydney is not your typical relationship but even more beautiful for being so. Sydney is lost, or at least I felt as if the character is, until she finds Ridge. The same can be said for our hero, whose heart splits in two when the friendship between himself and Sydney becomes something more.
Sydney is beautiful and kind, aware throughout that she is walking a thin line with Ridge, learning to communicate with him through sign language and music. As much as she tries to fight her heart, it is safe to say the heart always wins. Hoover has created two amazing characters that draw you into their relationship. We want things to work out between them, we feel every emotion with them, shed tears when they cry and feel happy when they get what their heart desire. This is one of my favourite literary couples.
Hoover is a fabulous writer, one who I feel puts her heart and soul into these characters, you know with every chapter just how much she loves the story and it makes the reader fall in love too. This is a more romantic tale than I’m accustomed to, no over the top scenes here but when we are granted an intimate and steamy scene it is well worth the wait. The sensuality and intimacy of the scene between our characters is divine. I fell in love with Ridge and Sydney even more. Romantic and handled with the utmost care.
A fantastic addition to my bookshelves and one novel I know will be revisited again and again. Thank you *L* for the introduction. I am officially in love with this story and these characters.
My aim for the New Year is to work through reading all the amazing books that have been gifted to me by my fellow P Turners, because I’ve come to trust these ladies whole heartedly, they never steer you wrong.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

It doesn’t matter what Colleen writes I know I am going to love it and WITHOUT MERIT was no exception.

Colleen deals with the subject of depression very well and the signs and symptoms someone may experience. I feel this would help alot of readers suffering themselves to identify and hopefully seek any help they may need.

The thing I loved most about this book was the Voss family. Families come in all shapes and sizes and the Voss family are certainly no exception. With the head of the family seemingly uninterested the kids seem to play by their own rules. Colleen manages to turn this on it’s head and we see a very different side to this family. There are alot of characters in this family that I would love to hear more from, I certainly feel that some of them deserve their own book!

Of course it wouldn’t be normal to have a Colleen Hoover book that doesn’t take you on a rollercoaster emotionally and that is definitely the case here. From reading with your heart in your mouth to laughing out loud this book has it all.

Colleen goes back to her Y.A. roots with WITHOUT MERIT and doesn’t let us down.

A Stunning five star read. I only hope Colleen can keep going with these amazing stories she manages to give us.
