#BlogBlitz | #BlogTour | #BookReview | BECAUSE OF YOU by Hélene Fermont @helenefermont (1st April 2019, Indie Published #IndieAuthor @botbspublicity)

Welcome!! This is our stop on this Blog Blitz Tour for BECAUSE OF YOU by the wonderful Hélene Fermont.

I would firstly like to say a rather big thank you to the amazing bobby dazzler that is Sarah Hardy @ BookOnTheBrightSide and of course the awesome Hélene Fermont who gifted me an early copy of BECAUSE OF YOU. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

How desperate are you to get the one you love?
When Hannah and Ben meet at a friend’s party, he knows she’s The One. But Hannah’s in an intense relationship with Mark and planning to return to her native Sweden to embark on a teaching career.

Desperate to make Ben fall in love with her, rich spoilt heiress Vanessa sets in motion a devious string of events that ultimately changes the course of four people’s lives indefinitely.

Hannah is the love of Ben’s life, yet Vanessa will stop at nothing to claim the man she is convinced is her destiny.

Because of You is a dark, morally complex and cross-generational story of enduring love, fate and destiny.

So, you want to know what I thought??

I’m always eager to try new authors so when an opportunity to read Because of You came up and I read the Synopsis I was quick to sign up.

Set over 36 years BECAUSE OF YOU is based on the life of Hannah Stein. It starts with Hannah setting out to London to embark on a gap year before heading back to Sweden to finish a degree in teaching. Hannah’s maternal grandmother lives in London and sets Hannah up to live with a close friend of hers. Hannah and Ella bond straight away and Ella quickly becomes a huge part of Hannah’s life.

As Hannah struggles to adjust to life in the city away from her close family she tries to integrate herself into the community to enable her to meet new people and make friends. She eventually finds herself hanging out with Sanna and Rosie who take her out to nightclubs and dancing. On one of these trips she meets Mark who sets out to win her heart. As they begin a turbulent relationship Hannah finds herself fighting against all who love her and dislike Mark as well as her own head. She eventually meets with Mel who tries to match make her with Ben who falls instantly in love with her.

This book jumps from year to year and I did find it a bit of  a mission to keep track of what was happening when, but you do get the gist of it and events as they unfold. I’ll be honest and say I don’t think it needed quite as much of an “introduction” as was included. I think the book would have worked just as well starting from about half way. That being said I understand what Helene was trying to achieve by writing throughout Hannah’s whole life, you sort of get more of an insight into who Hannah is and the decisions she makes.

I did struggle to like Hannah at times. She seems adamant to destroy her own happiness. I found her really frustrating and wanted to just knock some sense into her, especially decisions she makes in regards to Ben and Linus. If Linus was acting the way he was with somebody, I just don’t think you would keep him hanging around. However there were other times that I warmed to her and did feel sorry for her, I think she was just very naive when she arrived in London and people took advantage of that. Mark was very unlikable and I was happy when Hannah got rid of him, just a shame it didn’t happen sooner. I would have also liked less characters, we seemed to get introduced to someone then they would disappear for years but I did grasp who was who later on in the book and it got a bit easier but it would have been more enjoyable if there were just 2 or 3 that the book concentrated on.

Obviously being set over 35 years there are lots of events happening throughout this book. The book has every emotion you could ever have, there are deaths, friendships, happiness and sadness. There are so many different themes that i’m not really sure what genre you would put this into, there are definitely no boring bits.

I did struggle to get gripped by this book if i’m honest but after about 50% I found myself invested in these characters and eager to see where their path would lead. I was definitely more gripped by Hannah’s later years than the start of the book.

Definitely one to preserve with if you struggle at the start, the last half is definitely worth it. I’ll be interested to see what else Hélene has to offer!!

#IncidentReport | #BookReview | ONE MINUTE LATER by Susan Lewis @susandlewis (February 21st 2019, Harper Collins @HarperCollinsUK )

ONE MINUTE LATER by Susan Lewis
21st February 2019, Harper Collins UK

It’s takes one minute to change everything…

Vivienne Shager has it all. A highflying job. A beautiful apartment. Friends whose lives are as perfect as her own. But on the afternoon of her 27th birthday, Vivi has a heart attack.

Now Vivi’s life shrinks back to how it begun, as she moves back to the small seaside town she grew up in. With her time running out, there is one thing she wants to know the truth about.

Some secrets are best left in the past…

Thirty years earlier, Shelley’s family home, Deerwood farm, bursts full of love and happiness. But one family member has hidden a secret for all these years. Until Vivi comes home demanding answers, and it takes just a moment to unravel the lie at their heart of their lives…

Vivienne thinks she has it all. The flat in the posh part of London, the great job as a lawyer, lots of good friends and a boyfriend that doesn’t want to be in her pockets but when on her birthday she has a massive heart attack her whole life is altered.

As Vivi finds out she needs a new heart and whilst waiting for one to become available her whole life has to change otherwise there is a high chance she won’t live she has to uproot to her childhood home so she can be looked after by her family and friends. As she tries to adjust to this new lifestyle she is also determined to find out about her real father, a secret her mother is intent on holding.

The story jumps from present day to 1989 where we are introduced to the Raynor family who live at Deerwood Farm and although we get to see lots about their lives and obviously know there is a link between the two stories, we have no idea what that link is until much later in the book, although as it progresses you don’t start to think the story is going one way. I quite enjoyed the Raynor story, more than the Vivienne story if I’m honest. Deerwood was described as a very beautiful place and really felt like it came alive.

I have to be honest and say that the link between the 2 for me was very disappointing. I felt that there was a huge build up throughout the story that ended on an anti climax. Small characters had a brief mention to then have a huge role later on. I also didn’t have a huge connection with Vivienne, I found her irritating and she took some of the shine away from the story for me. I feel like the link was sort of included to take it away from being a romance novel and try and turn it into a thriller and that didn’t really work for me. I would definitely describe this book as a romance.

That being said the book has been give a 4 star review by me because the ending is so good. I actually got goosebumps and felt myself getting very emotional throughout the last few pages. It didn’t go where I thought it would, but this pleased me as the ending it did have seemed a bit more realistic than what I expected to happen. You can certainly tell that Susan has done her research into heart failure and transplants as the information included seems to be spot on. The ending completely turned the book around for me.

If your looking for something a bit more hard hitting than just a regular run of the mill romance novel then definitely give this a try.

#ThrillerReads | #BookReview| BEFORE I FIND YOU by Ali Knight @aliknightauthor (November 1st 2018, Hodder @HodderBooks)

BEFORE I FIND YOU by Ali Knight
Published; November 1st 2018, Hodder Books

Maggie is a husband watcher. A snooper, a marriage doctor, a destroyer of dreams, a killer of happy-ever-afters. She runs her own private detective agency specialising in catching out in those who cheat. And she is bloody good at it.

Helene is a husband catcher. A beautiful wife, a doting step-mother, a perfect home maker and a dazzling presence at parties. She has landed herself with one of the most eligible bachelors in town – handsome property developer Gabe Moreau.

Alice is just a teenager. A perfect daughter to Gabe, a kind stepchild to Helene, a tragic girl to a dead mother. She lives a sheltered but happy life, until she finds that handwritten note ‘You owe me. I’m not going away.’

All three women suspect Gabe Moreau of keeping secrets and telling lies. But not one of them suspects that these lies could end in cold-blooded murder . . .

This book has a very intriguing start. Starting off from Maggie’s point of view we know she has been injured badly in some way but with a woman hanging over her we don’t know the reasons or the detail as to what has happened so you have to keep reading. A good way to get a reader hooked from the start.

Written from the point of view of three women, Maggie who is a private detective, Helene who hires her and Alice the step daughter of Helene and Daughter of the man Maggie is hired to investigate. The first thing I noticed is that some chapters written from the point of view of 2 different people will tell the same situation but they never quite matched so you know some or both people were lying. This was very clever of Ali because you knew you were never quite getting the whole truth. Also it added to the story knowing what each woman was thinking.

Each character comes across as a little bit crazy and nothing is quite what it seems. Alice especially seems very troubled and if she was my daughter I would be a little bit worried about how she reacts to people and situations. I definitely would not class her as normal.

There are lots of twists and turns in this book and you cannot predict what happens. Nothing or nobody are as they seems, even the person I thought was supposed to be out heroine turns out to be harbouring a whole heap of secrets. I did not have a clue how Ali was going to cross the i’s and dot the t’s but boy does she bring it all together for one fantastic ending.

If you like thrillers and books that are so unpredictable they make your head hurt, then this book is for you!!

#ThrillerReads | #BookReview| AND SO IT BEGINS by Rachel Abbott @RachelAbbott (November 15th 2018, Wildfire @headlinepg)

AND SO IT BEGINS by Rachel Abbott
Published; November 15th 2018, Wildfire (Headline)

510Htx-mWuL.jpg

So this is how it ends. It is clear to me now: one of us has to die.

Mark and Evie had a whirlwind romance. Evie brought Mark back to life after the sudden death of his first wife. Cleo, Mark’s sister, knows she should be happy for him. But Cleo doesn’t trust Evie…

When Evie starts having accidents at home, her friends grow concerned. Could Mark be causing her injuries? Called out to their cliff-top house one night, Sergeant Stephanie King finds two bodies entangled on blood-drenched sheets.

Where does murder begin? When the knife is raised to strike, or before, at the first thought of violence? As Evie stands trial, the jury is forced to consider – is there ever a proper defence for murder?

I signed up to read this on a platform that only releases a bit each day. This was done over 10 days. This was the worse way to read it as at the end of each day I was so frustrated not being able to keep reading as there were always so many puzzles!

It was a fantastic well written book and I loved the anticipation of what was to come. Rachel wrote it so well that constantly left you eager for more, answering some questions but then asking a thousand more.

Evie seems from the start to be a very naïve young girl and in some ways I found myself getting frustrated with her. Cleo comes across as very protective, maybe just a little too much that as a reader I found myself wanting to give her a good shake and tell her to move on and find herself a life but as the book develops I found my first impressions completely shift and I discover not everything is as it seems and there is a lot more to all of our characters and a big back story that we discover more about the story progresses.

The blurb on this book is what first appealed to me and I wasn’t disappointed. This book was a thriller that keeps you turning the pages and constantly guessing right to the end.

Only thing that was a slight spoiler for me was the ending. I think the build up was so amazing and well written that the ending fell a little bit flat. I think it was maybe one of those books that the ending wouldn’t have been enough whatever it was and although it disappointed it didn’t take any of the enjoyment out of the book.

I would definitely recommend this book and I will be trying to dig out more of Rachel’s work. She is an author I think would soon become a favourite.

#BlogTour| #BookReview | #IncidentReport | LIES BETWEEN US by Ronnie Turner @Ronnie__Turner (October 1st, HQ Digital @hqdigitaluk)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of LIES BETWEEN US, the debut novel by fellow book blogger Ronnie Turner!

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Katie @ HQ Digital and of course the awesome Ronnie Turner who gifted me an early copy of LIES BETWEEN US. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

Lies Between Us.jpg

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

The past is always watching . . .

Three people, leading very different lives, are about to be brought together – with devastating consequences . . .

John has a perfect life, until the day his daughter goes missing.

Maisie cares for her patients, but hides her own traumatic past.

Miller should be an innocent child, but is obsessed with something he can’t have.

They all have something in common, though none of them know it – and the truth won’t stay hidden for long . . .

So, want to know what I thought?

WOWSERS! Where do I even begin with my praise for this book? It BLEW. ME. AWAY. It’s hard to read this book and believe that it’s a DEBUT novel!

This is a book that moves about so quickly between time frames and characters that you really do no need to pay attention to what is going on. I didn’t mind this at all! Told from three character perspectives give an added depth to the story as usually, you would find a crime thriller written from the victim/perpetrator angle.

The character who stood out most for me was Miller. I could easily devour an entire book written from his perspective. His story was uncomfortable to read and definitely gives you that ‘creepy’ factor. I was constantly questioning every action and wondering how and why it linked with the other two characters; Maisie and John.

Let’s talk twists. I got to a place with psychological thrillers where I would avoid any that boast ‘a twist you didn’t see coming’ or ‘this twist will blow your mind!!’ because nine times out of ten, it’s a bit of an anti-climax. Knowing how much Ronnie reads and understands the genre, I’m sure she was conscious that the twist in this book is one that the reader really doesn’t see coming until it’s revealed. This alone increased my enjoyment of the overall story.

Thank you Ronnie for restoring my faith in the genre! I can’t wait to read your next book!!

#IncidentReport | #BookReview | THE EXIT by Helen Fitzgerald (February 5th 2015, Faber & Faber @FaberBooks)

THE EXIT by Helen Fitzgerald
Published; February 5th 2015, Faber & Faber

Some people love goodbyes…

23-year-old Catherine is mainly interested in Facebook and flirting, but she reluctantly takes a job at a local care home after her mother puts her foot down – and soon discovers that her new workplace contains many secrets.

One of the residents at the home, 82-year-old Rose, is convinced that something sinister is going on in Room 7 and that her own life is under threat. But Rose has dementia – so what does she actually know, and who would believe her anyway?

As Catherine starts investigating Rose’s allegations, terrible revelations surface about everyone involved. Can Catherine find out what’s really going on?

I have literally just finished this book, one I found I could not put down!

Wow, what a roller coaster of a ride that was! I feel I can breathe again now!

Definitely will read more of Helen Fitzgerald, and to think I picked this book up from my local library on a whim.

Without giving much away or repeating the synopsis blurb this story started steadily and rapidly dragged me in. Based in a care home/hospice and centered round resident Rose who has dementia and Catherine who is a newbie care assistant, this story had so many twists and turns it is in no way predictable and isn’t like anything I’ve read before.

If you want a brilliant psychological thriller that is unputdownable this is for you. Just make sure you clear you social schedule as once started you will not want to stop till the very end!

#IncidentReport | #BookReview | THE HOUSE by Simon Lelic @Simon_Lelic (November 2nd 2017, Penguin UK @PenguinRHUK)

THE HOUSE by Simon Lelic
2nd November 2017, Penguin UK

35722135

What if your perfect home turned out to be the scene of the perfect crime?

Londoners Jack and Syd moved into the house a year ago. It seemed like their dream home: tons of space, the perfect location, and a friendly owner who wanted a young couple to have it.

So when they made a grisly discovery in the attic, Jack and Syd chose to ignore it. That was a mistake.

Because someone has just been murdered. Right outside their back door.

And now the police are watching them…

My Adam gifted THE HOUSE to me for Christmas after hearing an interview with the author on BBC Radio 2 as part of their book club back in December. Now, my Adam doesn’t really pay much attention when I start whittling on about books. He’s not a reader. He paints, crafts and builds. He does listen enough when I tell him about the Stephen King or Jo Nesbo I’ve just read!

After months of nagging at me, I finally picked this book up and got stuck in. Finishing the first chapter (written from the perspective of Jack), I’m thinking “Ok. I see where this book is going.”. BIG mistake as when I turned to the second chapter (which is the start of Sydney’s perspective) and was blown away. This is already like no book I have never read before. The way this book is written is very clever and had me glued to each page.

I was mistaken thinking that this book would have a paranormal element to it. Similar to COLD HOUSE ON THE HILL by Peter James. However, THE HOUSE plays more in the suspense zone. I was kept on the edge of my seat. I tried to be cocky, thinking that I had it all figured out. But as always, I was wrong.

Jack and Sydney, to me are unreliable narrators. I felt like I wasn’t being told the full story…led down the garden path so to speak. This made THE HOUSE all the more interesting to me. My interest and attention remained throughout and I could not get enough!

All in, a very intelligent novel. One that will keep you guessing until the very end!

#BlogTour| #BookReview | #IncidentReport| THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND by Karen Hamilton @KJHAuthor ‏(March 22nd 2018, Wildfire Books @headlinepg @wildfirebks)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND, the debut novel from Karen Hamilton.

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Anne Cater, Wildfire Books and of course Karen Hamilton who gifted me an early copy of THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

The Perfect Girlfriend cover final

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

Juliette loves Nate. She will follow him anywhere. She’s even become a flight attendant for his airline, so she can keep a closer eye on him.

They are meant to be.

The fact that Nate broke up with her six months ago means nothing. Because Juliette has a plan to win him back. She is the perfect girlfriend. And she’ll make sure no one stops her from getting exactly what she wants.

True love hurts, but Juliette knows it’s worth all the pain…

So, want to know what I thought?

Something very special is happening in the book world and it’s only going to get bigger and better. The standard of writing coming from debut authors is mind blowing and Karen’s THE PERFECT GIRLFRIEND is no exception.

Juliette is one of those characters that you cannot help love and hate. They are so close you wonder what she is doing to your mind! I loved Juliette’s determination. She literally stops at nothing to get what she wants and I admire her willpower! If only I had a smidgen of her motivation – I would be invincible! However on the flip side, she is pretty creepy on the border of scary. Juliette stops at nothing, considers no one and is ruthless in her efforts. All in….she’s a great character!

I have so many questions about Juliette’s past. Something to me just didn’t quite sit right with her story and it’s left me wanting to know more. You find yourself coming up with different scenarios to fit why she is reacting in the way she does. THIS is how you know a book has grabbed you by the goolies without wanting to let go!

If this is Karen’s debut novel…then I am VERY excited to see what she writes next and you should be too!

About Karen Hamilton;

Karen Hamilton

“I caught the travel bug after an early childhood spent abroad (Angola, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Belgium and Italy) and have worked as cabin crew for a major airline. In 2006, my husband and I put down roots in Hampshire and four years ago, I gave up flying to raise our three sons and concentrate on my writing. Now that they are a little older, I’ve begun travelling again (as and when it’s possible) and enjoy exploring places through their fresh eyes.

The Perfect Girlfriend is my first novel (released March 2018). It is a psychological thriller about a sociopathic flight attendant, Juliette Price. The book is rooted in my work experience, but not autobiographical! I realised early on in my flying career, that the moment I changed out of uniform, I became anonymous. It made me think about the identities behind uniforms and work personas and became an idea that would later help create my protagonist.

When Juliette is dumped by her pilot boyfriend, Nate, her dreams of a ‘happy ever after’ are thrown into jeopardy. She vows to win him back, whatever it takes. She surreptitiously embeds herself into his life by adopting a new persona and securing a position as a flight attendant with the same airline. However, these are only the first steps in her master plan as she reveals just how far one woman will go to achieve her dreams.

The novel explores themes of guilt, envy and revenge.”

#IncidentReport | #BookReview | SOMETIMES I LIE by Alice Feeney @alicewriterland (March 23rd 2017, HQ @HQstories)

SOMETIMES I LIE by Alice Feeney
March 23rd 2017, HQ

Screen Shot 2018-01-04 at 18.57.38.png

My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.

Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it.

Alternating between her paralyzed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

Screen Shot 2018-01-04 at 19.19.46.png

I won a copy of SOMETIMES I LIE right before the book was released with every intention of reading it as soon as I got my hands on it! However other books, life and other blogging commitements stood in my way and I’m sorry to say this book stayed on my shelf for a long time.

It was only in the past couple of weeks when I noticed Abby at Crime By The Book reading SOMETIMES I LIE in anticipation of the US release and something in me was triggered and I went straight to my shelf, pulled the book off and started to read. My word! This book was worth the wait and then some.

To kick off, the concept is one I have not read before. Amber Reynolds is in a coma, however is still able to hear all conversations carrying on around her. This already made me feel anxious and made me try and put myself in Ambers position about how I would feel knowing that I cannot communication with people right next to me. Pretty frigging scared, confused and claustrophobic.

Although I felt sympathy to Amber’s situation – the pessimist in me could sense that her narrative was entirely truthful. I completely devoured the ‘unreliable narrator’ theme, which worked PERFECTLY within this novel – which I haven’t experienced since HE SAID/SHE SAID (by Erin Kelly). I found myself doubting every memory Amber had and wondered for a while whether an ulterior agenda was at play.

The only thing painful about this book is that we now have to wait another YEAR for the follow up novel; SOMETIMES I KILL. The struggle is most definitely real!
