So this is how it ends. It is clear to me now: one of us has to die.

Mark and Evie had a whirlwind romance. Evie brought Mark back to life after the sudden death of his first wife. Cleo, Mark’s sister, knows she should be happy for him. But Cleo doesn’t trust Evie…

When Evie starts having accidents at home, her friends grow concerned. Could Mark be causing her injuries? Called out to their cliff-top house one night, Sergeant Stephanie King finds two bodies entangled on blood-drenched sheets.

Where does murder begin? When the knife is raised to strike, or before, at the first thought of violence? As Evie stands trial, the jury is forced to consider – is there ever a proper defence for murder?

I signed up to read this on a platform that only releases a bit each day. This was done over 10 days. This was the worse way to read it as at the end of each day I was so frustrated not being able to keep reading as there were always so many puzzles!

It was a fantastic well written book and I loved the anticipation of what was to come. Rachel wrote it so well that constantly left you eager for more, answering some questions but then asking a thousand more.

Evie seems from the start to be a very naïve young girl and in some ways I found myself getting frustrated with her. Cleo comes across as very protective, maybe just a little too much that as a reader I found myself wanting to give her a good shake and tell her to move on and find herself a life but as the book develops I found my first impressions completely shift and I discover not everything is as it seems and there is a lot more to all of our characters and a big back story that we discover more about the story progresses.

The blurb on this book is what first appealed to me and I wasn’t disappointed. This book was a thriller that keeps you turning the pages and constantly guessing right to the end.

Only thing that was a slight spoiler for me was the ending. I think the build up was so amazing and well written that the ending fell a little bit flat. I think it was maybe one of those books that the ending wouldn’t have been enough whatever it was and although it disappointed it didn’t take any of the enjoyment out of the book.

I would definitely recommend this book and I will be trying to dig out more of Rachel’s work. She is an author I think would soon become a favourite.

#BlogTour| #BookReview | #IncidentReport | Come A Little Closer (DCI Tom Douglas #7) by Rachel Abbott @RachelAbbott (February 15th 2018, Black Dot Publishing)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of COME A LITTLE CLOSER which is the seventh story in the DCI Tom Douglas series by Rachel Abbott.

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Maura Wilding and the lovely Rachel Abbott who gifted me an early copy of COME A LITTLE CLOSER. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

They will be coming soon. They come every night.

Snow is falling softly as a young woman takes her last breath.

Fifteen miles away, two women sit silently in a dark kitchen. They don’t speak, because there is nothing left to be said.

Another woman boards a plane to escape the man who is trying to steal her life. But she will have to return, sooner or later.

These strangers have one thing in common. They each made one bad choice – and now they have no choices left. Soon they won’t be strangers, they’ll be family…

When DCI Tom Douglas is called to the cold, lonely scene of a suspicious death, he is baffled. Who is she? Where did she come from? How did she get there?

How many more must die? Who is controlling them, and how can they be stopped?

So, want to know what I thought?;

ARGH! I always seem to do this to myself. I read the blurb for a book and I am instantly drawn in and want to read more…only to discover that it part of a long standing series 😦 so I already feel like I’m behind on the characters and the story.

COME A LITTLE CLOSER is the seventh book in the series featuring DCI Tom Douglas and although I felt in parts that I had missed character development from previous novels – it didn’t take away any of the enjoyment for this novel and for me, can certainly be read and enjoyed as a standalone novel!

The subject matter throughout is enough to give you the jeebies – which I personally love in a crime novel. I’m slightly morbid in that I love to read interesting and new ways people are killed! (Does this make me insane?! Answers on a postcard!) This book has everything I want in a good police procedural; the pace isn’t too fast that you can’t keep up. It has that nice slow burn feel to it, giving you chance to really get stuck into the story and invest in the characters.

I’m definitely going to need to go back and start this series fresh and learn more about Tom and Rebecca in particular. They have that bond… similar to Tony Hill & Carol Jordan that a reader can only really understand their dynamic having read all they have been through.

About Rachel Abbott;

I was born and brought up in the north of England, and worked for many years as the managing director of an interactive media company. I wrote every day – everything from creative proposals to user manuals – but most exciting of all was writing interactive dramas – including for the Cluedo (Clue in the US) interactive games. I was fortunate enough to sell my company in 2000 and we moved to Italy where we bought and restored an old country house.

I have published six full length novels and one novella, and my seventh Come a Little Closer is due for release in 2018. I now live on the beautiful island of Alderney in the Channel Islands, where I write full time.
