MR. MAYFAIR by Louise Bay
1st October 2019 (Indie Published)

It should be the most shocking news I’d ever gotten—My boyfriend is getting married.

Okay, technically he’s my ex-boyfriend. Two months ago he decided he wanted a break. I still thought he was my happily ever after.

On any other day, knowing he was gone for good would be the worst thing that could possibly happen.

But not today.

Because not only is my boyfriend getting married—his bride is my best friend.

And they’ve sent me an invitation.

There’s no way I’m going to attend. I don’t care if it’s in beautiful Scotland.

Nothing and no one could convince me.

Not even when a deliciously handsome stranger tells me he needs to go as my plus one.

Not even when he shoots me a wickedly, sexy smile.

But then he offers me the opportunity of a lifetime—a dream come true. How can I say no?

But I have one condition. He has to be my new boyfriend. I mean, my pretend new boyfriend.

I’m about to find out that faking it can be a whole lot of fun.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

MR. MAYFAIR is the newest release from one of our favourite authors here at The P Turners, the fabulous Louise Bay.

And boy what a read this novel is, you have everything you could want and some things you didn’t know you needed. Louise Bay is an author who knows how to create the best characters, leading ladies who you’d love to be friends with, the kind of women who build up other women.

Then we have Mr Mayfair himself, a fine specimen of man, who has all the qualities we’ve come to love from our leading men. Tall, handsome, cocky in just the right amount and leaving us truly smitten. The chemistry between Beck and Stella is off the charts hot, leaving the reader begging for more. We’re on a journey of self discovery with these characters, strapped in and ready for the ride. We want to know everything, to experience it all and the dual perspective of the novel allows us just that.

I could not stop reading, eager to lose myself in this wonderful world, where two beautiful souls come together and whisk you away. Louise Bay, thank you. For creating such amazing characters, for bringing them and their story into the world and allowing your readers to share in the love of them. Because it is clear from the beginning that here we have an author who truly loves, cares and treasures her characters.

Mr Mayfair is a true diamond in the rough.

#BookReview | SHOPAHOLIC ABROAD (Shopaholic #2) by Sophie Kinsella @KinsellaSophie (March 15 2012 Transworld Books @TransWorldBooks)

Blurb:

For Rebecca Bloomwood, life is peachy. She has a job on morning TV, her bank manager is actually being nice to her, and when it comes to spending money, her new motto is Buy Only What You Need – and she’s really (sort of) sticking to it. The icing on the brioche is that she’s been offered a chance to work in New York.
New York! The Museum of Modern Art! The Guggenheim! The Metropolitan Opera House! And Becky does mean to go to them all. Honestly. It’s just that it seems silly not to check out a few other famous places first. Like Saks. And Bloomingdales. And Barneys. And one of those fantastic sample sales where you can get a Prada dress for $10. Or was it $100? Is Becky too dazzled to care?

Review:

This was another re read for me as I had already read this series a few years ago. I really enjoyed but fell behind when life got in the way so when I added the newest ones to my beat the backlist for this year it gave me a good excuse to re read the previous books.

Being back in Becky’s world is like coming home. I really enjoy Becky’s escapades and I find myself actually laughing out loud at the adventures she finds herself in.

In this addition Becky is doing great in her new job as financial advisor on breakfast TV and after clearing all her debt from the first book she now finds herself back in the red on hundreds of her store cards and her credit card. Then the opportunity of a lifetime comes up for Becky to move to New York with her boyfriend Luke Brandon and suddenly a world new world opens up to Becky when she realises she will be able to shop at the big places like Barneys, Bloomingwoods and sample sales galore.

Becky also gets given the opportunity to meet Elinor, Luke’s mother in this installment. As Becky sees who Elinor really is she becomes confused as to why Luke is so besotted with his mother. As Luke’s obsession grows so too does Becky’s negative bank balance.

Although I have never been to New York it is on the list of my must visit places so to be able to see it through Becky’s eyes (even if it was just the shops) has made me even more determined to visit. I loved this book and found myself eager to keep reading to discover the scrapes that Becky could get into next. I love how Becky is so loyal to her friends and family and how her instincts are also so spot in relation to the other characters. I also feel connected to Becky in that my safe place is home to my parents. Yet again Becky becomes Luke’s superhero as she manages to swoop in and save the day (& his company) for him.

Of course the shopaholic series wouldn’t be the same if there wasn’t a happy ending and goes Abroad covers that with Becky coming to the conclusion that she should sell up and move to New York by herself. With her debts finally cleared will Becky find the fresh start she’s looking for?

I can’t wait to read the next installment and discover for myself….

#BookReview ONE IN A MILLION by Lindsey Kelk @LindseyKelk (July 5th 2018, Harper Collins @HarperCollins )

Blurb:

Everyone wants that special someone….

Annie Higgins has one goal this year: to get her tiny business off the ground. But – infuriated by the advertising agency across the hall making fun of her job – Annie is goaded into accepting their crazy challenge: to make a random stranger Instagram-famous in just thirty days.

And even when they choose Dr Samuel Page PhD, historian and hater of social media, as her target, Annie’s determined to win the bet – whether Sam likes it or not.

But getting to know Sam means getting to know more about herself. And before the thirty days are out, Annie has to make a decision about what’s really important…

Funny, real and heart-meltingly romantic, Annie and Sam’s story is My Fair Lady for the social media age – and the perfect feel-good read.

Review:

One of my favourite authors, Lindsey Kelk can do no wrong in my eyes. I know that when I don’t know what to read I can pick up something by Lindsey and be gripped in just a few pages.

One in a Million followed the trend of Lindsey’s usual style of fun, easy reading Chick lit that you find yourself easily engrossed and eager to turn the pages.

Annie is a hard working, dedicated young woman who with the help of her best friend is starting to build her own company in a fashionable office block that costs the earth each month in rent. Being a social media guru they help to set people up with their social media presence, sort of like a management team but for social media. One of the other people in the office space bets them they cannot turn someone famous in a month, the person being the next one to walk into the coffee shop. When the next person that comes in turns out to be Dr. Samuel Page Annie begins to wonder if she has bitten off more than she can chew.

As Annie and Sam begin to get to know each other, they both begin to question themselves and their current lifestyles as well as each other. Annie slowly begins to see that life isn’t all about social media.

I found the characters to be very like able which is surprising as usually there is one or 2 of them that you hate. I did feel that the story was very predictable, I could sort of see where the ending was headed from a few chapters in but I did still really enjoy the story and getting to know both Annie and Sam. As always with Lindsey’s books there are a huge number of side characters that you can rely on to be strong minded, independent and fiercely awesome at being best friends (Every real life female needs one of Lindsey’s best friends).

The book was a very easy read and I couldn’t stop turning the pages until the very end. If you want something to lose yourself in with an element of comedy as well as romance then One in a Million is the book for you.

When Life put them together, the Universe noticed. What they didn’t know is that they were made for each other. Literally.

Theo
My ex broke me, or so I thought. I’d shut down, given up. But my past doesn’t seem so bleak when the woman I’ve only seen in my dreams walks into my usual coffee shop, jump-starting my heart and giving my soul a desperately needed punch to the gut.

She’s damaged goods. But not in the way you’re thinking. Life broke her. …And I’m here to kiss it and make it all better. She’s my queen. My redemption. My second chance at forever.

He’s gorgeous beyond words. Why he’s attracted to me when no one else is, is unfathomable. And yet, he is. He’s Mount Everest, and my climbing legs are broken. …I’m broken. Always have been. Always will be.

I’m drawn to him like the universe demands it. He accepts it as truth. I know better, and when he figures it out, I’ll be decimated.

I want redemption, but it’s a painful road to travel. I’ll have to face my demons. …And apparently, he wants to fight them with me.

All journeys have a beginning. This is Theo and Lauren’s…

THE C WORD (Just A Word #1) by Kerry Heavens
17th September 2015, Indie Published

“You must keep it inside.
You must never let it out.
It must never gain control.
Let it be who you are and you will lose everything.
Do I make myself clear?”
“Yes, Sir.”

Control
It’s a way of life for Max McQueen.
It doesn’t come easy, but he thought he had it mastered.
Until now
Now nothing works
It’s slipping away
He must find a way to get it back
Or he risks losing everything.
It’s just a word.
But it’s the thing he needs most of all.
It’s what holds him together.
Or is it what holds him back?

As part of the P Turners reading challenge we all have a list of books that have been on our shelves, unread, for too long. So we’re taking part in a Beat The Backlist and The C Word by Kerry Heavens was my first port of call.

I’ve been a huge fan of Kerry Heavens since I picked up a copy of Spencer last year and after meeting this incredible author a couple of times, I was eager to read this short novel. The C Word isn’t anything I was expecting, intrigued by the idea of complete control and the enigmatic lead character, our hero, who strives for a iron hold on his control, I devoured this novel.

Kerry Heavens knows how to write, to create beautiful men who test the limits of what is a hero. Here is an author who knows what kind of characters her readers want, to the point where we don’t even know we want them. The book is a short read, a delightful insight into this mysterious world.

I was left completely intrigued by the characters in this novel, eager to read more of their story, to delve deeper into this world set apart from ours. I am hoping that in the future Kerry Heavens gives us more of this story, more of these characters.

A very enjoyable read, keeping us intrigued and very happy.

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | DIRTY DADDIES by Jade West @jadewestauthor (May 16th 2017, Indie Published #IndieAuthor)

DIRTY DADDIES by Jade West
16th May 2017, Indie Published

Some bad girls need a firm hand to keep them in line.
I’m bad enough to need two.

Two older men who can teach me a lesson when I misbehave.
Two hot bodies to keep me warm in bed at night.
Two best friends who can learn to share a filthy-mouthed little brat like me.

After all… dirty girls need very dirty daddies.

***

Carrie Wells is nothing but trouble.

She’s wild and difficult. Not worth anyone’s time.

Carrie Wells is a beautiful little brat. She’s also a vulnerable young adult on my case list.

She’s half my age and totally off limits. I’m breaking every rule in the book by giving her somewhere to stay when she’s out on the streets with nowhere to go. And I’m breaking every rule of friendship by holing her up in my best friend Jack’s house while he’s away on business.

I thought life was difficult enough when I fell for the girl, but it gets a whole lot harder when Jack comes home early and finds a beautiful stranger causing chaos in his house.

And a whole lot harder still when he falls for her too.

He’s the one guy on this planet I’d share my last supper with. I’d share it gladly.

I’m just not so sure how I feel about sharing Carrie Wells.

After reading BAIT by Jade West, I knew going into another novel by this author that I would be best going in with an open mind and a poker face.

And what a poker face I needed when reading DIRTY DADDIES on the commute to and from work. Here is a book that plays on your heart strings, with Carrie Wells the young lady looking for love. She’s had a troubled past and needs a firm hand in a partner. What she gets is not what you would ever expect her to find or need, but what brings out the woman in her.

This is a novel that pulls you in, that takes hold of your attention and doesn’t let you go until the very end. You’re hooked, infatuated by the young Carrie Wells and her two older men, Jack and Michael. Two men who are utterly smitten and downright begging to be her guys.

These aren’t your average forty something men who you see on the commute to work, they’re a rare specimen of man who know exactly what they want and who have Carrie’s best interest at heart. With the bodies of much younger men. West has certainly given the older gents!

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | GENTLEMAN SINNER by Jodi Ellen Malpas @JodiEllenMalpas (February 5th 2019, Forever @readforeverpub)

GENTLEMAN SINNER by Jodi Ellen Malpas
Published: February 5th 2019, Forever Books

An all-the-feels novel of fierce love overcoming a dark past from the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling THIS MAN series.

Izzy White knows of the darkness in this world. After all, she escaped it long ago. Determined not to let her past beat her, Izzy has a secure, stable life with a job she loves in nursing. But one act of kindness will completely upend everything she’s so carefully built-putting her right back in the crosshairs of danger she’s been so desperate to avoid.

When Theo Kane shows up like a knight in shining armor, Izzy can’t help thinking she’s been saved from one threat and exposed to another. His imposing physique, the harsh lines of his face, and the wariness of everyone who comes close are just a few clues to Theo Kane’s notorious reputation. The man is positively terrifying. But with Izzy, he’s tender and a complete gentleman, and her fascination with the mysterious beast of a man becomes too powerful for her to walk away.

As Theo’s demons come to light, running becomes even more impossible. And yet staying together could doom them both.

Where do we start with this novel, the latest treasure from one of my all time favourite authors Jodi Ellen Malpas.

Let me start by saying that I am utterly and completely in love with this story, with these characters and I did not want it to end. Theo Kane and Izzy White are every bit the couple we expect from JEM, beautiful, intriguing, sexy as hell and utterly swoon worthy. Here is an author who knows her audience, she gives the reader exactly what they want and so much more.

Theo Kane isn’t like other JEM alpha’s, he is bigger, meaner and yet even more desirable. Posing a threat to those around him, all except Izzy White. Here is a woman who will not bow down to a man, she stands her ground and will fight for those she loves. Their relationship isn’t without complications, as to be expected with any JEM novel but there is a raw beauty to their relationship that cannot be denied. The chemistry between them is palpable, emitting from every page, forcing us to read until we get to the very end.

There is something about Theo Kane that hits you, the reader, so far to the core that you want to be Izzy White, maybe not the horrid past she has had the power to overcome but the gentleness and caring nature she shares with Theo. This is a story that struck me to the core, in a way that does not happen often for this cynical reader. I can read some love stories and be utterly unmoved, but JEM has a way of writing that never fails to touch the reader.

I finished the book in a matter of days, a feat for me when 2019 has been completely kicking my ass so far. But this novel was the perfect escapism, letting me leave behind the stress of work and just enjoy reading, enjoy the characters, the talent of the author and forget about everything else.

I was so eager to read this new novel that I ordered it in both paperback and e-book version, the paperback will go nicely on my book shelf, right next to the other JEM treasures housed there. As for the e-book, this is safely on my Mum’s Kindle. Already she is reading and falling in love with Theo and Izzy, enjoying the new adventures into the wonderful world created by JEM. I cannot wait for her to read it all, to fall for these characters on a level she hasn’t before.

If anyone asks for a book recommendation this year, this novel will definitely be the one I talk about. Already I’ve got my colleague intrigued and my fellow P Turners. No one should pass up the chance to pick up a novel by the amazing Jodi Ellen Malpas, because I can promise you this, every reader needs a little JEM in their life.

#RisqueReads | #BookReview | THE BREED: CASSTIEL’S VOW (The Breed #1) by Alice K. Wayne @QueenOfTheBreed (August 13th 2014, Indie Published) #IndieAuthor

THE BREED: CASSTIEL’S VOW (The Breed #1) by Alice K. Wayne
Published: August 13th 2014, Indie Published

After the brutal kidnapping of her brother, Tessa Roberts, a human born with the ability to read other human minds, plunges herself into the dark and mysterious world of the Breed, hell bent on finding him. What she encounters however, is far more than she bargained for.

Vampires and werewolves are one race known as the Breed, and are locked in a centuries old war against vicious human Hunters. With the help of Casstiel, the fierce leader of the Breed’s defense team who carries a fiery passion for her, can she find her brother before the war erupts on their doorstep? Or will lies and betrayals end the new life she’s forged for herself, along with the lives of everyone she loves?

When *S* asked me if I’d read the novel THE BREED: CASSTIEL’S VOW and explained to me that this was a vampire story, I instantly said yes. Vampires are my passion, I love nothing more than reading a good vampire story, throw in a few other supernatural beings and I am one happy camper. I’ve not heard of The Breed before, so came to this story completely blind.

Let me just say I was not disappointed; The Breed is something different. Cleverly thought out and well executed, this is a story of a world where vampires, werewolves and humans try to co-exist, throw in the possibility of some steamy scenes between handsome men and women, you’ve got a recipe for success.

I was intrigued by the idea that vampires and werewolves can not only co-exist with humans but also thrive, that species who are normally pitted against one another can actually work together, in relative peace. The writer has a created a world that I instantly fell in love with, sexy, strong vampires and werewolves running around saving the day. Throw in a few humans to keep everyone accounted for and you have a story that not only draws you but gets you siding with the supernatural creatures rather than our fellow humans.

Casstiel is our leading man, every bit as wise, handsome, strong and devilish as we’ve come to expect from this genre of novels. I loved his character, I loved the way he instantly became our hero. The developing love story between him and Tessa was just another tick in my favour. Tessa is a leading lady who comes into her own. This is a story about the characters journey’s in a world surrounded by chaos.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed reading this novel, I was rooting for every character we met along the way and could not stop reading. I have high expectations for any novel that covers vampires, werewolves and mortals alike and it is safe to say I was very happy. Here is a novel that instead of being afraid to make their characters scary, violent, romantic and swoon worthy, they threw it all into the mix. A very happy reader indeed.

I cannot wait to read more of this story, to see what happens to not only Casstiel and Tessa but the other characters created in the world of The Breed. I know where I’ll be escaping to for the next novel.
