#BlogTour | #IncidentReport | #BookReview | INBORN by Thomas Enger (January 23rd 2019, Orenda Books @orendabooks)

Welcome to my stop on this Blog Tour for the release of INBORN, the latest novel by the awesome Thomas Enger.

I would like to say that it is truly my pleasure to be invited onto this blog tour! Particular thanks to Anne Cater, Orenda Books and of course the awesome Thomas Enger who gifted me an early copy of INBORN. I am forever grateful and promise that the review below is 100% honest and of my own views.

To kick off, we have the “blurb” for the book;

When the high school in the small Norwegian village of Fredheim becomes a murder scene, the finger is soon pointed at seventeen-year-old Even. As the investigation closes in, social media is ablaze with accusations, rumours and even threats, and Even finds himself the subject of an online trial as well as being in the dock … for murder?

Even pores over his memories of the months leading up to the crime, and it becomes clear that more than one villager was acting suspiciously … and secrets are simmering beneath the calm surface of this close-knit community.

As events from the past play tag with the present, he’s forced to question everything he thought he knew. Was the death of his father in a car crash a decade earlier really accidental? Has his relationship stirred up something that someone is prepared to kill to protect? It seems that there may be no one that Even can trust.

But can we trust him?

A taut, moving and chilling thriller, Inborn examines the very nature of evil, and asks the questions: How well do we really know our families? How well do we know ourselves?

So, want to know what I thought?

Well…that was a pleasant surprise! After coming out of my Henning Juul book hangover, I was more than keen beans to read INBORN. I was ready to fully invest myself in Thomas’ writing and how he masters building a character base.

INBORN is a fast paced courtroom drama, with plenty of twists and turns throughout. Short, choppy chapters keep the pace of the book moving quickly. There’s no time to get bored in this story! The switch between ‘then’ and ‘now’ with each chapter threw me straight back into Even’s world as he pushes to learn the truth. Just as I thought smugly to myself ‘Oh – it’s them. It HAS to be.’ I am soon feeling a little silly. This is a book that keeps me on my toes throughout.

The story is written predominantly from Even’s perspective and his manner is very typical of a young person in today’s society. Ruled/governed by what is posted on social media, Even feels the full force of his peers suspicions. Before he even faces the courtroom, he is already fighting in his corner in the trial by social media – a trial led solely on speculation.

Given the location and the plot – I can see this easily being turned into an online series. One which I would happily sit and binge in an afternoon! There is enough with each character to have you wanting more and I finished this book very much with more questions than I had answers to.

This is a great book for younger readers who love their crime fiction, or for those looking for a book to get them started! I’ll certainly be recommending this book to my friends who have children! I cannot wait to read what’s next for Thomas!

About Thomas Enger;

Thomas Enger (b. 1973) is a former journalist. He made his debut with the crime novel Burned (Skinndød) in 2009, which became an international sensation before publication. Burned is the first in a series of 5 books about the journalist Henning Juul, which delves into the depths of Oslo’s underbelly, skewering the corridors of dirty politics and nailing the fast-moving world of 24-hour news.

THE ACCIDENTAL LIFE OF JESSIE JEFFERSON (Jessie Jefferson #1) by Paige Toon
Published; January 30th 2014, Simon & Schuster UK

Meet Jessie, the daughter of Johnny Jefferson, as featured in Johnny Be Good and Baby Be Mine…

My fifteenth birthday was the worst day of my life, and it’s inconceivable to think that any single day in my future will ever be as bad. My mum was killed in a freak accident on her way to pick up my cake. Even when there was still no sign of her after two hours later, and my friends started to arrive at our house, it never occurred to me that she wouldn’t be coming back.

That was six months ago. My mum died without telling me who my real dad was. And for a while I hated her for it. I thought she’s taken the secret of my father’s identity with her forever. But she didn’t. Holy hell, she didn’t.

Because three weeks ago I found out the truth. And I’m still reeling from the shock of it. My dad is none other than Johnny Jefferson, mega famous rock star and one-time serial womaniser. And now I’m on my way to LA to meet him and his family.

My tiny little world has just got a whole lot bigger…

Paige Toon is always a favourite of mine but when an author steps away from their usual style and releases something else it always makes me a bit weary but I had absolutely no need to be.

I would recommend that you read the three books in the Johnny Jefferson series first as this contains Johnny & Meg and although you don’t need to know their story it will help to understand a bit better if you do.

THE ACCIDENTAL LIFE… is Paige’s first attempt at young adult and although you can tell it is aimed at younger readers it didn’t take any of the enjoyment out of it for me, in fact I enjoyed that it was so easy to read and it left me feeling really warm and cute inside.

Cute is a good way to describe this story. I loved being back with Johnny and Meg and seeing how happy they are and although Jessie is a shock they soon embrace her into their fold.

The story doesn’t end in a cliffhanger but there is definitely more to Jessie’s story and with two more installments already released we don’t have to wait to find out what else life has in store for Jessie.

A proper feel good heart warming story that leaves you feeling all fuzzy inside.

THIRTEEN REASONS WHY by Jay Asher

You can’t stop the future.
You can’t rewind the past.
The only way to learn the secret . . . is to press play.

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker–his classmate and crush–who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah’s voice tells him that there are thirteen reasons why she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he’ll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a firsthand witness to Hannah’s pain, and as he follows Hannah’s recorded words throughout his town, what he discovers changes his life forever.

thirteen-reasons-why

When you see a book is about suicide you expect it to be hard hitting but THIRTEEN REASONS WHY really hits you in the stomach. I read most of it with my heart in my mouth.

I read this in two days because I really could not put it down. I was enthralled and gripped by this story like no other. Yes it was tough to read with a subject matter that would be hard to deal with but it’s written in such a captivating way that you need to know the ending.

Now you know from the beginning this isn’t a happy ending. A girl is dead but hearing the reasons for it really make you stop and think. Do we really know what that girl is thinking? Should we say hi to the person we pass on the street everyday just so they know they have been noticed?

Suicide is such a taboo topic but Jay deals with it in such a way that I think it will make people ask for help and other people notice someone who may need it.

This book is not easy to read. Not only does it deal with suicide there are other gut wrenching issues too like rape. It is very difficult and some people would struggle.

This book will stay with me for a very long time and it’s one I would read again just to remind myself what a rumour can do.

This is definitely a 5 star read for me.

#LettersFromTheHeart | #BookReview | Without Merit by Colleen Hoover @colleenhoover (October 3rd 2017, Atria Books @AtriaBooks)

WITHOUT MERIT by Colleen Hoover
October 3rd 2017, Atria Books

Not every mistake deserves a consequence. Sometimes the only thing it deserves is forgiveness.

The Voss family is anything but normal. They live in a repurposed church, newly baptized Dollar Voss. The once cancer-stricken mother lives in the basement, the father is married to the mother’s former nurse, the little half-brother isn’t allowed to do or eat anything fun, and the eldest siblings are irritatingly perfect. Then, there’s Merit.

Merit Voss collects trophies she hasn’t earned and secrets her family forces her to keep. While browsing the local antiques shop for her next trophy, she finds Sagan. His wit and unapologetic idealism disarm and spark renewed life into her—until she discovers that he’s completely unavailable. Merit retreats deeper into herself, watching her family from the sidelines when she learns a secret that no trophy in the world can fix.

Fed up with the lies, Merit decides to shatter the happy family illusion that she’s never been a part of before leaving them behind for good. When her escape plan fails, Merit is forced to deal with the staggering consequences of telling the truth and losing the one boy she loves.

It doesn’t matter what Colleen writes I know I am going to love it and WITHOUT MERIT was no exception.

Colleen deals with the subject of depression very well and the signs and symptoms someone may experience. I feel this would help alot of readers suffering themselves to identify and hopefully seek any help they may need.

The thing I loved most about this book was the Voss family. Families come in all shapes and sizes and the Voss family are certainly no exception. With the head of the family seemingly uninterested the kids seem to play by their own rules. Colleen manages to turn this on it’s head and we see a very different side to this family. There are alot of characters in this family that I would love to hear more from, I certainly feel that some of them deserve their own book!

Of course it wouldn’t be normal to have a Colleen Hoover book that doesn’t take you on a rollercoaster emotionally and that is definitely the case here. From reading with your heart in your mouth to laughing out loud this book has it all.

Colleen goes back to her Y.A. roots with WITHOUT MERIT and doesn’t let us down.

A Stunning five star read. I only hope Colleen can keep going with these amazing stories she manages to give us.
